This 12-generation genealogya work in progress since 1905--tracks almost 350 years of Ricker family history from 1647 to 1990 beginning with brothers George and Maturin Ricker immigrants from the Isle of Jersey off the coast of France who settled in present-day Dover New Hampshire in the late 17th century. The introductory pages contain histories of George and Maturin as well as an account of Ricker origins in 11th-century Saxony; the Ricker Coat of Arms and heraldry information is also included. More than 500 sources have been tapped to produce this work which includes more than 40000 individuals and more than 2800 different surnames.Female as well as male lines have been researched; but the direct Ricker line is the focus. The genealogy is laid out in Register style for the user's ease. First second and third marriages are detailed as well as names of adopted and bastard children; and Mayflower connections too. The Rickers were one of the first New Hampshire families; this genealogy traces their movement through New England and then into Nova Scotia New Brunswick and eastern townships of Canada as well as most of the United States as family branches moved north and west. Within these records can be found the military history of Rickers who served in the French and Indian Revolutionary 1812 Aroostook Seminole Civil Spanish-American and Vietnam wars as well as WWI and WWII. A 1689 map of Cocheco New Hampshire present-day Dover area portraits of Rickers and illustrations of Ricker homes and property complement the genealogy. An everyname index and index of localities make finding information easy. <meta charset=""""utf-8""""> Percy Leroy Ricker and Elwin R. 1960ref. 78753Bloomington IN: Indiana University Press 1960. Reprint edition. Hardcover. Very good/Good. xvii 595 1 pages Maps. Introduction by Cecil Fletcher Holland. Editor's Notes. Index. Previous owner's mailing label inside front cover. This is one of the Civil War Centennial series. Basil Wilson Duke May 28 1838 - September 16 1916 was a Confederate general officer during the American Civil War. His most noted service in the war was as second-in-command for his brother-in-law John Hunt Morgan; Duke would later write a popular account of Morgan's most famous raid: 1863's Morgan's Raid. He took over Morgan's command after Morgan was shot by Union soldiers in 1864. At the end of the war Duke was among Confederate President Jefferson Davis's bodyguards after his flight from Richmond Virginia through the Carolinas. Duke's lasting impact was as a historian and communicator of the Confederate experience. As a historian he helped to found the Filson Club Historical Society and started the preserving of the Shiloh battlefield. He wrote numerous books and magazine articles. This substantial well known and highly regarded work presents itself to the reader as a history of a renowned unit of Confederate Cavalry. The narrative is made the more relevant interesting and indeed entertaining because its author rode within its ranks. So the book also works admirably as a first hand account of the experiences of a cavalier of the South at war. John Hunt Morgan was a Kentuckian and a regular soldier who was drawn reluctantly into war against the federal government. He raised the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry regiment and as its Colonel fought at Shiloh but it was as a raider that Morgan's Cavalry achieved most fame and for some notoriety. 'Morgan's Raid' which took place in July 1863 was a remarkable feat of cavalry command. With lightning manoeuvres Morgan broke past the Union lines and led nearly 2500 Confederate cavalrymen deep into Kentucky Indiana and Ohio making this action the deepest incursion into the north of uniformed Confederate troops in the war.
