1912rif. 1031B3London: Adam & Charles Black 1912. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6.5". Walter Tyndale. A beautifully colour-illustrated topographical work of Thomas Hardy's Wessex. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding smartly rebacked with the spine laid down. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seventy-two colour plates unfortunately lacking the plates to face pages 136 and 154. With a folding map to the rear. Artwork by Walter Frederick Roope Tyndale a British watercolourist and travel writer known for his landscape paintings and depictions of architecture and street scenes. A charming topographical exploration of the historical realm of Wessex. Originally a county before 1066 in the nineteenth century the name became synonymous with Thomas Hardy's fictional landscape of South-Western Britain. Many of these illustrations were the inspiration for Hardy's portrayal of Wessex. Written by Charles James Hankinson who wrote under the name Clive Holland an English journalist and photographer. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding smartly rebacked with the spine laid down. Externally smart with slight bumping and rubbing leading to minor loss of cloth to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Hinges are starting and a little more delicate towards the rear. Internally generally firmly bound with slight periodical weakness notably more fragile to page 137 which is almost loose. Pages are generally spotted heaviest to the first and last few pages including the folding map and excluding the endpapers. Very Good Adam & Charles Black hardcover
