Uncut in original bds. spine damaged title browned & worn at edges & with authors name supplied in ink. First Edition. Poetical satire by the notorious Shakespeare forger dedicated "To that most enlightened Phalanx the Reviewers of Great Britain". Ireland himself figures in the work: " With respect to the merits of this writer whose works are very numerous it would be unfair to have recourse to the reviewers; the stigma of having deceived the public uniformly follows his career and be his efforts what they may the lash of the severest criticism at all times pursues him. It is said however that many productions from his pen have appeared without any signature which have been much commended: it is therefore to be regretted that this gentleman does not avow to the world all he has written that they may be fully enabled to appreciate the extent of his literary acquirements ". footnote p. 122 NCBEL III 386. 1st Edition. 1788rif. 10351London: Published by Molteno & Co. No. 132 Pall Mall 1788. Etching and aquatint with hand-colour. Lovely contemporary colour. As usual text line is attached on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 14 7/16 x 20 5/8 inches. A charming seaside view by Samuel Ireland the engraver and collector connected with the infamous Shakespeare forgeries. Ireland was a minor engraver and publisher who worked in London at the close of the eighteenth century. He was an avid art and manuscript collector and many of the works that he engraved and published were after pieces found in his own collection. This romantic view is after a painting by DeVlieger which was in Ireland's collection at the time. This image operates as both an example of the picturesque tradition in eighteenth century landscape prints and as an advertisement and promotion of Ireland's celebrated collection. With this image Ireland presents himself as both a serious engraver and a respected collector. Unfortunately today Ireland is better remembered for his involvement in the Shakespeare forgeries than for his evocative prints. Over a period of many years Ireland's son William Henry sold his father a series of forged manuscripts which he claimed to be written in Shakespeare's hand. Ireland who willingly trusted his son added these forgeries to his collection and presented them in an exhibition to the literary community who accepted them as genuine. The charade progressed so far that an invented play entitled 'Vortigern' which William Henry had written and presented as a missing work by Shakespeare was performed at Sheridan's Drury Lane theatre by some of the leading actors of the age. When the hoax was eventually discovered Ireland's reputation was ruined and his son was disgraced. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Dictionary of National Biography; Lugt Les Marques de Collections Supplement 2715a. Published by Molteno & Co. No. 132, Pall Mall unknown

Small 4to (194 x 120 mm), 232pp., With the contemporary printed book label of William Nicholl, original boards, worn, uncut While Calvert was in Constantinople, scandals broke causing him to leave, because of his illegitimate children, and charges of him having his own private harem. These charges followed him to London as well. Calvert did support his illegitimate children, sending money to the stepfather of his heir Henry, by Hester Whalen. In 1768, another scandal befell him while at home in London. This time he was accused of abduction and rape by Sarah Woodcock. During the trial, he was tried as much by the press as he was in the courtroom. The jury, believing that Sarah did not make adequate attempts to escape or to report the crime properly, and he was acquitted. To avoid any further disgrace, he retreated to Italy, and died in Naples in 1771. Unfortunately the many problems he created still existed for his colony. Before his death, he had made his illegitimate son Henry Harford, his heir, leaving him the province of Maryland, in America. This Edition not in O'Higgins, Irish Trials.
