Albert Anton Patzowsky Half calf spine label lettered in gold red sprinkled edges. 4 102 pp. First edition in Latin of the first military pharmacopoeia for Habsburg Austria with the privilege for 10 years in German dated 29 September 1795 and granted to the publisher Albert Anton Patzowsky on behalf of the last Holy Roman Emperor Franz II Joseph 1768-1835 who was to become Franz I the first Emperor of the Austrian Empire in 1804.Until 1794 the Austrian army met its pharmaceutical needs with help from civilian pharmacists. To provide the medical support that the army needed garrison hospital pharmacies were built. Patzowsky published a German edition of the present pharmacopoeia in the same year: Oestrreichischen Militär-Pharmacopoea zum Gebrauche der Oestrreichischen Fieldärzte Vienna A.A. Patzowsky 1795. 1851ref. 200107AG1851. London Edinburgh & Dublin J & F. Tallis 1851. Original steel engraving / Vintage map. Drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. Partly hand-coloured. Illustrations by H. Warren and Engraved by J.H. Kernot. Plate Size: 33 cm x 25.5 cm. Sheet Size: 37.5 cm x 27.2 cm. Vintage 19th century map in very good condition. Beautiful map of Austria with gorgeous illustrated vignettes from the Victorian publisher. This is the Austria of the Hapsburgs and the political sub-divisions show the polyglot nature of this multi-national domain. Renowned cities such as Milan Prague Buda and Pest and ancient regions such as Lombardy Tyrol Illyria Carinthia Salzburg Istria Bohemia Moravia Croatia Dalmatia Sclavonia Hungary Banat Transylvania Bukovina and Gallicia show the extent of Vienna's empire. Prussia and Russia border her to the east after the three powers consumed Poland in the past century. Ottoman Turkey is still supreme in the Balkans for the time being. To the West lie Switzerland and the still-congealing Italian and German states. The Adriatic Sea washes Austria's underbelly. A scale bar can be seen off the coast. The Hapsburg coat-of-arms is located in the top right corner of the map. Relief is shown through hachuring. The mighty Danube flows irresistibly and timelessly across a region that would be undergo radical reorganisation and bloodly tumult over the next century or more. John Tallis 7 November 1817 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". 1777ref. I14F46A1C75MVienna: Johann Thomas Edlen von Trattner 1777. Mottled calf gold-tooled spine brown morocco spine label marbled endpapers red edges. 8vo. Medical ordinances and a list of the new taxes on nearly 2000 named medicinal components. As the Habsburgs in the 1770s attempted to strengthen their control over the professional standards and business activity of pharmacists and medical personnel in their realms the authorities imposed new taxes on behalf of Empress Maria Theresa covering all components of medicaments described and prescribed in the Pharmacopoea Austriaco-Provinciali the official book of pharmacological recipes for the entire Habsburg empire with editions published almost every year from 1776 to ca. 1822. The ordinance on the subject was promulgated on 25 November 1775 and took affect on 1 January 1776 so the 1776 edition was clearly the first but the 1790 edition calls itself the second. It is therefore not certain whether the present copy is the true second edition or a reissue of the first. The ordinance pp. 3-8 of the preliminaries is signed by Christian August Graf von Seilern Statthalter and Thomas Ignaz Freiherr von Pöct Kanzler and contains seven points including sanctions and criminal procedures in case of fraud. Trattner was printer and bookseller to the Imperial Court.Foot of spine damaged otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Blake p. 24 1776 ed. Johann Thomas Edlen von Trattner, unknown
