The report of a commission established by Article V of 1840 to codify Hungarian criminal law and propose reforms. The commission included important Hungarian jurists such as Ferenc Deak an important figure in the Hungarian liberal movement and Jozsef Eotvos a progressive statesman who wrote on prison reform. Ultimately its proposals were not adopted but the report remains important for its ambitious scope and humane enlightened ideas regarding the treatment of crime and criminals. The owner behind the ink stamp is Gaal Gaszton 1868-1932 the prominent Hungarian politician who served as president of the National Assembly. The ownership inscription to the right begins with a family name as expected for Hungarian names and that name is Barany. Gaal Gaszton's mother was Barany Matild 1845-1884 which suggests he may have inherited or otherwise received this book through his mother's line. Through his father Gaal Gaszton was a member of the Gaal family an ancient noble lineage connected to the municipality of Gyula in Hungary. 1781réf. ABC_50510Pressburg =Bratislava 1781. Ca. 46 x 32 cm. With an engraving of Pressburg Bratislava and an engraved title. A rare and highly evocative example of an 18th-century Preis-courant or commodity price current published in Pressburg modern-day Bratislava capital of Slovakia. Such documents produced at regular intervals often weekly served as indispensable instruments of commerce providing merchants and their correspondents with up-to-date market prices for a wide range of goods. The present work dated 2 April 1781 is a particularly attractive sheet. It combines a finely engraved panoramic view of the city with a densely organised tabular listing of commodities arranged in four columns on both sides. Prices are carefully entered by hand in ink in florins fl. and kreuzer kr. reflecting the customary monetary system of the Habsburg lands. The mixture of printed framework and manuscript additions is characteristic of privately published price currents which were distributed rapidly and updated locally to reflect current market conditions. The range of goods listed points to the thriving trade in raw materials medicinal substances and colonial produce. As was common practice in the 18th century many items are recorded using Latin nomenclature underscoring the documents relevance to apothecaries wholesalers and international merchants alike. Such lists offer a vivid cross-section of early modern trade from local agricultural products to exotic imports circulating along established commercial routes. At the time of publication Pressburg occupied a position of considerable importance within the Habsburg Monarchy. Situated on the Danube it functioned as a major trading hub linking Vienna Buda and the wider regions of Central Europe. Until 1783 it also served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and as a major administrative and cultural centre where German predominated as the language of official and commercial communication. Its mercantile community comprising traders professionals and artisans played a key role in sustaining long-distance trade networks. The work has been folded the folds are slightly torn along the edges. John Tallis 7 November 1817 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much-anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Music for the opening was under the direction of Sir George Thomas Smart and the continuous music from the exhibited organs for the Queen's procession was "under the superintendence of William Sterndale Bennett". Hardbound blind dark-blue cloth-lined boards. Few tiny marks of handling to covers contents fine. - "Von diesem Buch wurden 120 Exemplare gedruckt die alle numeriert sind ." but this copy has no number. - Karl Stengel was born in 1925 in Hungary. He studied art in Budapest where he trained in painting and drawing and also received an introduction to the principles of set design and architecture the influence of which can be seen in his current artistic style. After 1956 he studied for a period at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and subsequently taught at the Pädogogische Hochschule at Munich University. He also lived in Spain where he was able to dedicate himself totally to painting before then moving to Italy. - Recently Stengel created a series of drawings for the Italian Institute of Culture in Germany that were dedicated to Boccaccio's Decameron and to Frammenti by Giuseppe Ungaretti and of late the artist has also conceived a series of pastel drawings that are homage to Antonio Tabucchi's novel Tristano muore. Stengel has exhibited his works worldwide in solo and collective shows; his personal exhibitions have been hosted throughout Italy most recently in the Salone Donatello in the Basilica of San Lorenzo Florence and then at the George Toparcenau Cultural Centre in Curtea de Arges Romania. - "More than anything Stengel's works should be interpreted as attempted answers to the question of whether painting today can encompass human experience and be able to address life in all its absurdity complexity and tragedy." James Wyckoff New York Art Magazine - ed. March 2010 - "Karl Stengel is a man who has lived through the entire twentieth century with 'avant-garde' pride and this inflames his paintings as if he were still a twenty-year old. The surreal and metaphysical figures are made up of dreams and irony and they populate his drawings as statues sometimes as still as silhouettes or shadows sometimes gesticulating in their anatomical deformations. In his latest production the surreal smaller size representations on paper have a markedly European ancestry in particular German Expressionism and the coagulating shades of red blue and green seemingly come out of the dynamism of expressionist brushwork to create a symbolic bridge between abstraction and figuration that are inextricably fused."
