1992Best.-Nr. 153831Paris: Les Éditions du Solstice 1992. Ten etchings signed by Lichtenstein First edition first printing number 24 of 80 copies signed by Lichtenstein and Ginsberg on the limitation page from a total edition of 125; each print is initialled lower right by Lichtenstein numbered lower left. In 1991 Lichtenstein was approached to provide illustrations for a French edition of Allen Ginsberg's The New Fall of America. Ginsberg selected 11 poems to be translated into French and Lichtenstein created 10 collages inspired by them from which etchings were printed for the book. The imagery is characteristic of Lichtenstein's work in popular illustrations. "The image of Ginsberg as a Buddha in a lotus pose for instance was inspired by a vignette symbolizing meditation on a yoga class sheet. Cubistic visions of the city and emblems of explosions alternate with more peaceful landscapes to provide a visual counterpart to Ginsberg's vivid evocation of contemporary America" Morgan Library and Museum. Folio. 10 coloured etching and aquatints on 250 gsm Velin d'Arches paper. Sheet sizes: Approx 48 x 35.4 cm. Image sizes: Approx 37.5 x 27.8 cm. Original red cloth spine lettered in white Velin d'Arches paper pages unbound. With the publisher's blue cloth slipcase. Fine in fine slipcase. Corlett 267-276. hardcover
1964Best.-Nr. 362757Milan: Galleria Schwartz 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. A twenty-image gallery of original engravings printed from plates made in 1962 the defining year of American Pop Art by the defining artists of the era including Andy Warhol his first multiple Roy Lichtenstein Wayne Thiebaud Jim Dine and others. These etchings are presented in book format with each artwork bound into the book in a mat with a clear plastic protector. Usually these images are four removed from the book. However in your cataloguer's most humble opinion this book presentation is far superior to looking at individual images hanging on a wall. The intimate presentation of the book and the alphabetical sequencing which requires patience to find the famous works leads to unexpected discoveries. And the excitement of having a Warhol you can set on your lap is a real joy. For this issue of the International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving the editors commissioned the hottest young artists on the American scene to make engravings for this book mostly in 1962 for publication two years later. The highlight is Roy Lichtenstein's etching of a light switch. Wayne Thiebaud adapted a painting of yo-yos shifting the placement of the toys for this black-and-white medium. Andy Warhol appropriated an ad for a discount cooking pot that he found on page 35 of the October 16 1962 New York Daily News and made it visually interesting through clever cropping the ad may have appeared on other days as well but I found it first on October 16 and I stopped looking. These engravings were issued in an edition of 100 copies: 60 numbered with Arabic numerals 25 numbered with Roman numerals for the contributors and 15 artist's proofs marked "e.a." for "épreuve d'artiste." The mats measure 9 by 11-3/4 inches plus the binding stub. This bound volume includes 8 leaves two blank for text with all contents presented in English as well as French and Italian translation. The introduction is by Billy Klüver who worked with Andy Warhol. The original etchings presented in this volume are all signed by the artist with the exception of the Warhol which is blindstamped. They are as follows with captions for untitled works invented by your cataloguer and the mediums and plate sizes w x h taken from the cataloging of the Museum of Modern Art website: 1. George Brecht. Untitled "1 cut out this block". Etching; plate 4-3/4 by 5-1/2 inches; 2. Allan D'Arcangelo. "American Madonna." Etching; plate 4-3/8 by 5-7/8; 3. Jim Dine. "Corner Brace." 'The architectural elements in the Entablature series can be seen as providing the artist with ready-made designs in much the same way as comic strips and advertisements had provided him with easily recognised motifs in his earlier work.' Christoph Grunenberg July 2000 Tate Between 1971 and 1976 Lichtenstein produced two series of entablature paintings based on photographs he had taken in New York of 20th century architectural ornaments in Lower Manhattan and specifically in the vicinity of Wall Street and 28th Street. During this period in May 1974 he began to also discuss the creation of the 'Entablature' print series with Master Printmaker Ken Tyler of Tyler Graphics Ltd. who Lichtenstein collaborated with closely to make many of his original prints over the years. Together Lichtenstein and Tyler produced eleven 'Entablature' prints each one taking an epic two months to complete before they would move on to the next composition. This series Tyler explains would push him and Lichtenstein far beyond the known limits of printmaking. At the beginning of each print's creation a great deal of trial and error would ensue before they could perfect the complex foil layering and embossing/debossing of patterns. On the occasion of their exhibition 'Roy Lichtenstein: Pop Remix' 2014 the National Gallery of Australia described this series of prints as 'the pinnacle of technical complexity in Lichtenstein's collaboration with Tyler and the staff at Tyler Graphics'. Knowing this it is easy to understand why 'Entablature III' is seen as a ground-breaking artwork and with only 16 prints issued in the standard edition it makes this example all the rarer. DELUXE SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES SIGNED BY LICHTENSTEIN complete with 24 offset lithographs printed in color on Coronado Opaque SST Cover paper. Although known primarily for large bold works Roy Lichtenstein "always worked from meticulous finished sketches. During a distinguished career of almost three decades he has seldom deviated from the practice of using these sketches to generate paintings prints and sculpture in ongoing and discrete series. "The twenty-four drawings in this sketchbook are 'all landscapes figures and houses but they are essentially landscapes.' They do in part recall certain of his landscape images of the mid-sixties. However now devoid of the familiar Lichtenstein dots each is composed exclusively of brushstrokes-a combination of free seemingly spontaneous marks evoking Abstract Expressionism played against what the artist refers to as 'cartoon' brushstrokes that continue to represent his concern for artifice. "The drawings in Landscape Sketches 1984-1985 inspired by a semiabstract landscape that appeared as an element in his recent Paintings series constitute his first attempt at creating 'plain landscapes out of all brushstrokes'-the frankly 'fake' or cartoon marks providing the link that allows us to associate these new works with those we recognize as archetypal." This is a handsomely bound and extra-illustrated history of one of England's most celebrated stately homes Holland House here minutely described with all its furnishings and grounds along with numerous anecdotes of its distinguished inhabitants. Located in Kensington which today has long been engulfed by greater London the mansion began life as Cope Castle built beginning in 1607 by Sir Walter Cope. From Sir Walter the manor passed to his daughter Isabel wife of Henry Rich who became the first Earl of Holland in 1624. Like the king to whom he was loyal Rich was beheaded in 1649. Later in the century Holland House was rented by William Penn and in 1767 it was bought by Henry Fox first Lord Holland 1705-74 who held the position of leader of the House of Commons. In its day Holland House hosted the leading lights of Europe including Byron and the future American president James Monroe. Our author Princess Marie Henriette Norberte of Liechtenstein 1843-1931 was motivated to write these memoirs by her friendship with the widow of the fourth Lord Holland. The very attractive binding is the work of French-born binder Lucien Broca 1829-1910 who immigrated to London in 1875. According to Tidcombe's "Women Bookbinders" Broca was a "superb trade finisher" who originally worked for Antoine Chatelin then went into partnership with German émigré Simon Kauffmann from 1876 to 1889. Tidcombe and Sarah Prideaux's former pupil Katherine Adams believe that most of the bindings attributed to Prideaux between 1890 and 1900--some 290 volumes--were actually done by Broca with Tidcombe giving the Frenchman credit for the "best Prideaux bindings." Prideaux never publicly acknowledged his work perhaps for fear of disappointing fans of the most famous woman bookbinder in England. Broca was in business for himself as an "Art Binder" in 1901 and our binding was probably done about that time. The beauty of the present design is dependent on his perfection of finish--crispness of line and solidity of impression were Broca's hallmarks. Macmillan and Co unknown

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 208 pages; 138 illus. 118 col. . -- with a bonus offer--; Between 1961 and 1968 at the height of the Pop art movement Roy Lichtenstein 1923-1997 created about 50 large black-and-white drawings. Not only was their imagery culled from consumer culture entirely new--baked potatoes ads for foot medication and BB Guns--but so was their treatment which drew on the rudimentary character of cheaply printed commercial drawings. Conceived independently from Lichtenstein's paintings these drawings recast illustrations from newspaper ads and comic books into works of keen visual intensity curiously echoing the clean-edge aesthetic of 1960s geometric abstraction. "Drawing is the basis of my art" Lichtenstein later affirmed; "It is where my thinking takes place." Published for an exhibition at the Morgan Library in New York this richly illustrated publication offers 120 color illustrations plus essays on Lichtenstein's technique and on his little-known 1967 Aspen project in which the artist transformed a room into a black-and-white cartoon drawing. . 2010. 3775726438 . Ills. 32 x 32 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; This publication surveys the seminal group of Girl paintings by Roy Lichtenstein. In the Summer of 1961 Lichtenstein embarked on a series of iconic images of women taken directly from newspaper clippings and the romance comic books prevalent in post-war America. The anonymity of mass-produced cheap comics helped him capture specific impressions of real life while maintaining the necessary degree of aesthetic distance afforded by what he understood to be the 'high restrictive quality of art'. The 'Girl' paintings together with the war images or 'Boy' paintings established him as a major protagonist of the American Pop Art movement. His amalgamation of text and image high and low culture and his strategy to involve appropriated images continues to be a rich source of inspiration for subsequent generations of artists from Richard Prince Jeff Koons and Raymond Pettibon to John Currin and Elizabeth Peyton.A conversation between Jeff Koons and Dorothy Lichtenstein opens the catalogue. The publication also brings together an exceptional collection of over 130 images of paintings drawings sources and documentary photographs. Included in these images are 22 full-coloured plates of the 'Girl' paintings 18 of which are featured in the exhibition. The catalogue closes with a select chronology of Roy Lichtenstein's life pinpointing important exhibitions and occasions. An artist's book response to the Girl paintings created by Richard Prince is also included as an insert. . 2008. 0300149271 . She and the artist worked together daily and the bond between them is evident in the photographs. Lichtenstein is shown working on two major series Reflections and The Interiors. He is completely absorbed oblivious to the camera as he mounts ladders assembles colors composes and steps back to consider the effect. During this period Lambrecht assisted in gathering material for a major retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. As a result the photographs include scrapbooks and sketchbooks and other archival material that document Lichtenstein’s entire career. There are stencils of Ben-Day dots clippings from newspapers and comic books Polaroid snapshots rolls of tape and boxes of colored pencils. Lichtenstein encouraged Lambrecht to make photographs and was often pleased and amused by the results. These images offer fascinating insight into Lichtenstein’s working processes and source materials as well as being vibrant works of art in their own right. In her essay Dorothy Lichtenstein wife of the artist recalls the collegial atmosphere of the studios in New York and Southampton in the early 1990s a time of extraordinary productivity. Edward Robinson an associate curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art describes Lambrecht’s process and approach. . 2011. 1580933181 . The Monacelli Press hardcover
