Die Erstausgabe des berühmten Fotobandes von Gotthard Schuh, der - in neuer Fassung - 1954 gleichzeitig bei der Büchergilde Gutenberg und im Europa Verlag, Zch., erschien. Diese vom Zürcher Grafiker Heiri Steiner gestaltete Erstausgabe unterscheidet sich wesentlich von der späteren Fassung, sowohl was die Bilder und die Behandlung des Bildes als auch was den Text betrifft. Am auffallendsten ist, dass hier die Bilder, wo sie illustrierend sind, randangeschnitten und eher grossflächig verwendet werden, im Gegensatz zu den Bildern, die eher den Text erläuternden, Marginalien-Charakter, haben, die innerhalb des Satzspiegels und nicht randangeschnitten angeordnet sind. Unübersehbar ist schliesslich eine eher gesellschaftskritische Haltung gegenüber den kolonialistischen Verhältnissen im Lande sowie ein viel zurückhaltender Umgang im Bild mit der Nacktheit der Frauen. Noch deutlicher als im Bild, wird die Kritik des Fotografen an den herrschenden sozialen Verhältnissen im Text. Das Buch ist aber auch verlagshistorisch von Bedeutung. Es erschien zu einer Zeit, in der die Schweiz vom deutschsprachigen Buchmarkt abgeschnitten war und ein Export (ins Dritte Reich) nahezu ausgeschlossen. Es war eines der seltenen damals erschienenen Bücher, die sich nicht nur auf die Schweiz besannen, sondern auch mit dem Ausland beschäftigten und sogar im Ausland - als Plantagenbesitzer - lebende Schweizer kritisierte.
