1950ref.

****************** New York, Alfred Kren Gallery, 1985. One and only edition. In English. Large brochure of 25.5 x 18 cm. Unpaginated. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Alfred Kren Gallery in New York about the ex-votos of the Brazilian Northeast, e.g. sculptures made to be given to a saint, to the Virgin, etc. in gratitude for a prayer or a wish granted. In black and white, contains photos of 54 ex-votos as well as other photographs. Texts by Fatima Bercht, photos by Glenn Steigelman and Giovanna and Francesco Del Brenna. Enriched with a letter in Portuguese signed by the gallery owner Alfred Kren, who asks a Brazilian bookseller about the viability of a sale of several copies of this brochure in Brazil. While Kren expresses doubts, fearing that the retail price in the United States will turn into "an exorbitant amount of Brazilian cruzeiros" once the booklets get exported, he likes the idea enough to send this copy as a gift to the recipient of the letter.
2021ref. Trilingual book with text in English, Portuguese and French. First edition. An almost square oblong book of 22.5 x 23 cm for 252 pp. Photos of Brazil during a time of thorough transformation, from the 1950s when Rio de Janeiro was still the capital to the end of the construction of Brasília, capital designed by legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer. Forewords by Sandra Gonczarowska Mussi and Andrey Rosenthal Schlee. "Through his photographs, Jankiel Gonczarowska offers us fragments of a reality organized and reflected in his art from a striking personal vision about which he confirms, in his own words, that to be a good photographer you have to dedicate yourself to the profession, get in touch with people before photographing them and travel the world... My goal in creating this book was to make everyone discover this human journey marked by optimism and the history of a better Brazil, at a time when the difference between classes was striking, but each class had its beauty." (Preface) The author had the opportunity to rub shoulders to Niemeyer, President Juscelino Kubitschek and visit several places in Brasília then closed to the public, such as the Alvorada Palace. The photos suddenly change from black and white to color during the 1960s. A remarkable album, rare above the Equator.
