1750Best.-Nr. ABC_50779Oosteeklo 1750. Ca. 23 x 14.5 cm. Kept in a plastic folder between tissue paper. 1 l. Copy of an unknown letter of the Stadholder Prince Frederik Hendrik or Frederick Henry 1584-1647 to the States General in The Hague on the difficulties and the danger that threatened the Dutch colony in Brazil. Probably the original letter was written by his secretary Constantijn Huygens who always accompanied the Prince when on campaign. At the time Frederick Henry was on campaign in Zeeuws Vlaanderen Zeeland-Flanders and he stayed in the army camp near Oosteeklo ca. 5 km south-east of Sas van Ghent awaiting the upcoming siege of Hulst. On the 28th he departed at the head of his army to Hulst where the siege began on the 8th of October. The city was captured on November 5th.The letter beginning with the words Edele ende mogende Heeren besundere goede Vrunden contains the special request to alleviate the emergency situation in the Dutch colony in Brazil now Northeast Brazil around Recife and Olinda in the state of Pernambuco caused by the uprising of the Portuguese sugar plantation owners as quickly as possible and to come to the aid of the Dutch West India Company government there. Both the script and the watermark Van der Ley point to the mid-18th-century as the time of copying. Also copied are two annotations apparently occurring in the lower margin of the original regarding the route of the letter from Oosteeklo to The Hague: 1: "Uytrecht d. 21 Sept. 1645 gele.d. Jac v.Dam te Rotterdam à f. 1-" and 2: "70 Stuv. tol. Muttelenbroek".Very interesting document regarding the colonial history of Brazil as well as the relation between the Dutch Stadholder and the States General. The edges of the leaf are very slightly frayed with a rust stain from a paper clip to the upper-left corner of the leaf not affecting the text. Otherwise in good condition.l Churchill Watermarks nr. 192 1740. unknown

The first Japanese immigrants settled in Brazil in 1908 not coincidentally the year after the Gentleman's Agreement restricted immigration to the United States. The new arrivals mostly pursued coffee cultivation around Sao Paulo. The first volume covers the diplomatic agreements and legal framework for Japanese immigrants in Brazil. The second volume describes the various colonies established successful businesses and offers biographies of some pioneers. These volumes were published to coincide with the 2600th anniversary of Japan a milestone used to stoke the flames of nationalism in the early 1940s. These books were reprinted in the 1950s when Japanese immigration to Brazil boomed again and then again in the 1990s. Aoyagi was a major proponent of Japanese emigration and for the establishment of colonies in the Americas. He arrived in California in the 1890s was the first Japanese to visit Peru and then led the push for agricultural colonies in Brazil negotiating the agreements to allow settlements and agricultural exports. Bibliographia Brasiliana. V1. p93. Chadenat 754. not Sabin. ~ First edition of a French biography of the Jesuit martyr Ignacio de Azevedo by Father Gilles-Fran‡ois Beauvais 1695-1773 who modeled his book on the Italian biography by Father Cabral pseudonym of Giulio Cesare Cordara 1704-1785 published at Rome in 1743 under the title "Relazione Della Vita E Martirio Del Venerable Padre Ignazio de Azevedo". In the present biography dedicated to King Stanislaus I of Poland Beauvais made several additions for example the "Martyre du V‚n‚rable PŠre Diaz et de ses Compagnons" pp193-262. Most of the book is devoted to the life of the martyr Ignatius de Azevedo from Porto 1528-1570 who worked in Brazil as Visitator for the Jesuit Order. On 15 July 1570 he and his 39 companions while at sea were killed by French Calvinist pirates near the Canary Islands. In 1854 these "40 martyrs of Brazil" were canonized. Beauvais's biography may be regarded as a loose translation with additional material of Cordara's biography which was translated into Spanish in the same year and into German in 1856. A second edition of Beauvais's version was published at Brussels in 1854. The martyrdom of Ignacio de Azevedo and his companions has inspired many literary works up to the present day. Paris.
