1925ref. 227551925. Latin America SS Resolute voyage photograph album 1925 documenting a steamship journey through Central and South America during the interwar expansion of international maritime tourism following the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. The photographs record port cities landscapes and civic landmarks encountered along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Latin America during a period when luxury liners increasingly connected North American travelers with destinations across the hemisphere. By the 1920s transisthmian canal travel had reshaped global shipping and passenger routes allowing cruise itineraries to combine Caribbean Pacific and South American destinations within a single voyage. The album preserves visual evidence of these emerging travel circuits while also documenting major urban and cultural centers of the region during a period of modernization and expanding hemispheric exchange. Photo album compiled during the 1925 voyage of the steamship SS Resolute containing approximately 150 original silver gelatin photographs mounted to black album leaves and captioned in white ink. Contemporary red leatherette album titled "Photographs" in gilt and bound with red cord. Photographs measure approximately 3 x 4 inches to 4 x 6 inches. The photographs document the vessel's route through Panama and the Canal Zone before continuing along the Pacific coast of South America and returning through the Atlantic basin. Numerous photographs depict Panama City and the Panama Canal including views of the Culebra Cut and Gold Hill major engineering features of the canal project completed little more than a decade earlier. Other sections of the album record urban and harbor scenes in Cartagena Colombia including colonial architecture and waterfront activity. Photographs from Peru show Lima's Plaza de Armas the bullring at Miraflores and rural Andean valleys near Arequipa with terraced agricultural landscapes and local communities. Images from Chile capture the steep hills and harbor districts of Valparaíso along with coastal plazas and naval vessels near El Morro. Additional photographs from Argentina depict major civic spaces in Buenos Aires including Plaza San Martín and Plaza de Mayo documenting the monumental architecture and modernizing urban landscape of the city during the 1920s. The steamship SS Resolute operated as a passenger liner serving long distance routes during the interwar expansion of luxury cruising and international tourism. Voyages such as the one recorded in this album reflected the growing accessibility of transcontinental travel made possible by the Panama Canal and by the increasingly global network of commercial steamship lines linking the Americas. Mild toning consistent with age; mounts and binding well preserved. Overall very good condition. The photographs collectively document a hemispheric itinerary connecting canal infrastructure colonial port cities Andean landscapes and rapidly modernizing capitals offering a visual record of the cultural and geographic environments encountered by travelers during the height of the steamship era. unknown

1824ref. 57794Santiago de Chile: Imprenta Nacional 1824. Chile's "Moralistic Constitution" Chile's short-lived but significant constitution of 1823 nicknamed the "Moralistic Constitution." Chile's first officially independent constitution was adopted in 1818 and granted revolutionary leader Bernardo O'Higgins considerable power which he consolidated further in a widely despised revision in 1822. O'Higgins was peacefully deposed by a new more conservative group under the leadership of Ramón Freire in early 1823 and a special congress was convened to create a new constitution presided over by Juan Egaña. Egaña was chiefly responsible for drafting and proposing the present document which was approved the next day and promulgated the day after. The eighty-one page 277-article document begins with an outwardly liberal appearance: after stating that "Chile is a nation independent of the Spanish monarchy and of any other power" it declares that its "constitutional protections and laws protect every individual who lives in Chile" and provides citizenship to any person who has lived and worked in the country for one year all quotations our own translation. It further states that "every Chilean is equal before the law" and takes a firm stand against slavery. Article eight reads in full that "In Chile there are no slaves: any who stands on its territory for one natural day will be free. Any who carry on the business of slavery may not live here more than one month and may never be naturalized." On the other hand article ten declares that "The state religion is the Apostolic Roman Catholic Church: to the exclusion of worship and practice of any other." Practicing Catholicism is made a requirement for suffrage and the broadly granted citizenship is just as easy to lose including for "habitual drunkenness or prohibited gaming." Additionally the press is considered "free protected and rewarded so long as it contributes to morality and good habits" and is expressly forbidden from "meddling in the mysteries dogmas and religious discipline and morals generally approved by the Catholic Church." Despite its eager acceptance and immediate promulgation Egaña's document proved unwieldy and unpopular; it was suspended the following July and abrogated in November. A more liberal constitution would finally replace it in 1828 although this sparked a civil war in which the conservative faction came out ahead once again. The new constitution of 1833 was spearheaded by Egaña's son Mariano de Egaña and remained in force until 1925. A rare document; Rare Book Hub records only this copy at auction since 1981. 81pp. Small quarto. Later calf spine gilt with raised bands gilt leather labels. Binding slightly rubbed Text lightly tanned small stab holes in gutter from original stitching gutter periodically reinforced with paper. Very good. PALAU 59709. BRISEÑO I 74. hardcover
