In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. 17993 volumi in 8vo (211x132 mm). vii, [5]-321, [3] p., [1] grande cartina ripiegata del Canada e [6] tavole; [4], 344 p. e [4] tavole; [4], 294 p. [mancante l'ultima carta, bianca] e [2] tavole. First edition of this scarce book which, although suggesting to be an account of a voyage to South America, is actually a work of fiction. Durret himself claims that it was based on an account by the "Sieur Bachelier" to which he only added notes and of which improved the style. This however is not correct, the work is by Durret. "Chapter 17 of the first part and chapter 19 contain descriptions of Santa Catharina and Brazil in general. The letter is signed "Durret," but the account is by Bachelier, a surgeon. (INED 1678.)"Contains useful information on the products of the South American coast" (James Ford Bell Library). - Title page cut short at foot and outer margin.
