1843ref. 150721843. New-York Yearly Meeting of Women Friends. Epistle from the New-York Yearly Meeting of Women Friends to its Subordinate Meetings 1843 an internal Quaker communication documenting women's participation in the organizational and religious life of the Society of Friends during the antebellum period. Separate women's monthly quarterly and yearly meetings had developed within the Society of Friends as formal settings in which women conducted religious business and New York Yearly Meeting describes these meetings as an important means of women's social education as well as collective religious discernment. Addressed specifically to subordinate meetings the epistle provides primary-source evidence of the communication structure connecting women Friends across different levels of Quaker organization demonstrating how a yearly gathering transmitted counsel and religious guidance to constituent bodies. New-York Yearly Meeting of Women Friends. Epistle from the New-York Yearly Meeting of Women Friends to its Subordinate Meetings. New York: Press of M. Day & Co. 1843. Size and pagination not supplied. The pamphlet belongs to a longstanding Quaker practice of issuing epistles as communications from yearly meetings to other Friends; New York Yearly Meeting continues to identify epistles among the formal documents generated by its sessions. Its explicit address to "Subordinate Meetings" is particularly significant as evidence of the organizational relationship between the women's yearly meeting and smaller constituent meetings showing the mechanisms through which religious counsel circulated within a female-led institutional framework. The pamphlet predates the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and survives from a period in which Quaker women already possessed established spaces for collective deliberation and administrative responsibility within their religious community. New York Yearly Meeting traces the tradition of separate women's business meetings to the seventeenth century noting that women prepared instructions for conducting meetings and participated in substantive community governance. The 1843 epistle thus supports research into antebellum women's religious leadership Quaker organizational history female associational culture and the circulation of institutional communications among nineteenth-century American women. No specific defects are supplied; overall very good. A focused primary source documenting the formal channels through which Quaker women maintained religious and organizational relationships among meetings in antebellum New York. unknown
