Internally in fair condition in aged and worn covers repaired along the spine with brown tape. There are eleven hand-coloured engravings: one on the cover a frontispiece two vignettes at the beginning and end of the poem and seven full-page illustrations in the body of the poem six of them with blank reverses. The cover illustration frontispiece and all but two of the full-page engravings are attributed to Chandler and Duran. The hand-coloured engraving on the front cover is of a cat pouncing on a rabbit in foliage while other rabbits scatter together with the publisher's details and the title 'The Delectable Historie of the Cat and the Rabbits'. This illustration also features without the lettering included within it on p.21 of the poem. The back cover carries an advertisement for Cottrell's business. The pagination includes the covers and on the reverse of the front cover paginated as p.2 is an attractive full-page frontispiece engraving of the cat in question. The poem begins on p.3 under the drophead title: 'Ye Delectable Historie of YE CAT AND YE RABBITS.' It is in 52 four-line stanzas numbered in Roman numerals and begins: 'Once on a time by the side of a wood Dwelt a populous burrow of Rabbits Happy contented moral and good - A people of excellent habits.' The poem ends with the rabbit having eaten a number of rabbits being shot with an arrow by a shepherd: 'Then sighing repenting and breathing his last He uttered the moral which follows: “A rogue is a fool and soon is caught fast In the trap he has set for his fellows.”' Excessively scarce: the only two copies on OCLC WorldCat at Dartmouth Library and Brown University and no copies on COPAC. réf. 6932Boston: Printed by William S. Damrell 11 Cornhill. 1844. 8vo: 24 pp. Unbound and stitched. With printed grey front wrap rear wrap missing inscribed to 'Sir E. F. Bromhead Bassingham Lincolnshire from the author <T Wayland>'. On aged paper grubby at extremities and a little dogeared but tight and with text clear and entire. 'The general fact has been long before the public that the several States in the Union are indebted to various individuals in Europe to the amount of about two hundred millions of dollars. At the time when this debt was incurred very few persons either in or out of the indebted States gave themselves any trouble about it. Cities on paper were growing up in the depths of the trackless forest or emerging from the centre of the undrained swamp. The circulating medium expanded almost without limit certainly without forethought was hourly extending the means for farther investment. Nobody seemed to have observed that the real values in the country were precisely the same as they had been and that the only change which had really been effected consisted in the increased number of bits of handsomely engraved paper.' A significant copy of a scarce anonymous item with the author revealing his identity in the ownership inscription. No copy in the British Library or on COPAC. Worldcat confuses this with a work by Benjamin Robbins Curtis of the same title in the North American Review 1844. The only copy it lists of this work is at Brown University Library. See Image. 1885réf. 42031Philadelphia: W.H. Butler n.d. ca 1885. 1885. TRADE CATALOG. 5 11/16" x 12 3/4" color sheet folded to 6 panels. Illustrations. Among the successful shoe-machines invented by the Globe Buffer company was the “Globe Buffer” a machine for “buffing” or sandpapering the bottoms of boots and shoes. The first “ Globe Buffer" was set up in November 1881. The company also manufactured the “Globe Heel Scourer” for smoothing or scouring the edges of heels of boots and shoes. The company also introduced the "Globe Insole" an invention the promised to replace the flexible leather that was currently in vogue for insoles to shoes. It was invented and patented by Mr. George A. Fullerton and consists of a substance very similar to leather but which is stronger and much more flexible. To test the merits the shoes thousands of pairs were produced and worn and in not a single pair of them did a stitch give out. The material for the insoles is stronger than any leather of the same thickness. It is preserved while leather is destroyed by perspiration. The edges are smooth which prevents them from cutting the stitches. Shoes made of it will not squeak. The brochure offers one cover panel showing 2 cherubs one holding a woman's boot and the other the "Globe Flexible Insole; one panel offering the company's guarantee; and one panel offering information about their insoles. "Remember that the INSOLE is the foundation of the shoe and that Glove Flexible Insole" is superior in every particular to leather or any other known substance. That the stitches and tacks are all beneath the surface thus contributing a smooth soft cushion." Opposite 3 panels offers a beautiful color sailing scene showing a yacht race and with "Compliments of the Globe Buffer co. only Manufacturers of Globe Flexible Insoles at the bottom of one panel. One panel has been separated and neatly reattached using cellophane tape. W.H. Butler, n.d. [ca 1885]. hardcover
