Hardcover. no significant wear to book just a touch of fading to the cloth along the top edges of the covers; the jacket is lightly tanned at the spine with a bit of wear along the top edge and some very shallow chipping at the top of the spine. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page: "For Peggy & Norman / with love / Joan / Jan. 1962." The author's first and only novel whose central figure is a millionaire who was "cranky neurotic warm possessive prejudiced and generous. He was a discriminating collector and patron of art an epicure a devotee of psychoanalysis -- as well as an almost lifelong patient. He worshipped his beautiful wife but was never able to achieve the full reciprocal relationship with her that he dreamed of. He cherished but endlessly frustrated his four daughters. He antagonized most of his fellow trustees at the New York museum to which he had given so much yet the one he annoyed the most wept at his funeral." While one can't help but wonder -- especially when an author expends and seemingly exhausts his or her talent on a single novel and then goes silent -- whether the book has autobiographical underpinnings I've been unable to uncover enough information about the author apart from what's in her rear-jacket-flap biography to determine whether or not there was a real-life father behind the fictional figure of "Saul Bettelheim" in this book. The inscribees were actor/producer/director Norman Lloyd 1914-2021 and his wife; Lloyd is probably most widely known for his late-in-life role as "Dr. Auschlander" on the "St. Elsewhere" TV series but was active in the theatre television and movies from the 1930s until the 2000s and numbered many of the Hollywood elite among his friends and colleagues. 2003ref. 115295Oxford: Oxford University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2003. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. A Fine first printing of the first edition in alike dust-wrapper; From the dust jacket "Writing with marvelous brio Winchester first serves up a lightning history of the English language--"so vast so sprawling so wonderfully unwieldy"--and pays homage to the great dictionary makers from "the irredeemably famous" Samuel Johnson to the "short pale smug and boastful" schoolmaster from New Hartford Noah Webster. He then turns his unmatched talent for story-telling to the making of this most venerable of dictionaries. In this fast-paced narrative the reader will discover lively portraits of such key figures as the brilliant but tubercular first editor Herbert Coleridge grandson of the poet the colorful boisterous Frederick Furnivall who left the project in a shambles and James Augustus Henry Murray who spent a half-century bringing the project to fruition. Winchester lovingly describes the nuts-and-bolts of dictionary making--how unexpectedly tricky the dictionary entry for marzipan was or how fraternity turned out so much longer and monkey so much more ancient than anticipated--and how bondmaid was left out completely its slips found lurking under a pile of books long after the B-volume had gone to press. We visit the ugly corrugated iron structure that Murray grandly dubbed the Scriptorium--the Scrippy or the Shed as locals called it--and meet some of the legion of volunteers from Fitzedward Hall a bitter hermit obsessively devoted to the OED to W. C. Minor whose story is one of dangerous madness ineluctable sadness and ultimate redemption."; 8vo; xxvi 260 pages; 6 . Oxford University Press hardcover books
