2023ref. 212208London: Paul Holberton Publishing 2023. Hardcover. VG. As new besides a small stamp inside stating withdrawn from a research library. Quarto. Hardcover. Bound in black cloth with illustrated jacket. v 246 pages : illustrations chiefly color portraits ; 30 cm. "One day in London in 1770 the polymath Georg Christoph Lichtenberg 1742-1799 wrote: 'What a work could be written on Shakespeare Hogarth and Garrick! There is something similar in the genius of all three.' Two-and-a-half centuries on this book takes up the challenge. William Hogarth 1697-1764 and David Garrick 1717-1779 consciously associated themselves with Shakespeare throughout their careers. The three of them together embody the age-old relationship between plays painting and performance that shaped in particular the formulation of history painting by the Académie royale in Paris in the seventeenth century. History painting was identified as the highest form of art: a picture interpreting just a few lines of a revered text. In Britain Hogarth's David Garrick as Richard III transformed those ideas because although it looked like a history painting it was also a portrait of an actor in performance. With it Hogarth established the genre of theatrical portraiture and resolved a perpetual complaint about art in Britain: that there was no patronage of history painting and that all the British were interested in was portraits. This book offers a fresh examination of theatrical portraits -- best understood as a distinctly British kind of history painting -- through close analysis of the pictures and the actual texts used in performance recovering a sense of their contemporary reception and the context within which they were made. It also highlights the significance of Shakespeare Hogarth and Garrick within the European Enlightenment and the rise of Romanticism."--from the inside front flap.
