The Supplement is in fine condition as well. FIRST EDITION SCARCE. The Moore collection contains extraordinary illustrations from some of them most important painters and calligraphers in the long history of Chinese art. The subject matter of the book is traversed by the authors of the volume with scholarship and taste their text being accompanied by the fine illustrations most of them in monochrome and some in colour. The authors are full and illuminating in their descriptions their biographical and bibliographical contributions along with their treatment of the inscriptions and seals. The reason for bringing the inscriptions and seals into the foreground is because "calligraphy has long been considered a major art by the Chinese who frequently valued the inscription on a painting as highly or even more highly than the painting itself. A number of the scrolls depicted have inscriptions which certify their authenticity and are also the calligraphy of famous scholars. These contain many valuable comments on the technique of painting and statements of historical and biographical importance. The seals on the scrolls are not only works of art in themselves but are important as a record of the painting or as an expression of appreciation of it." The painters represented come from various dynasties in their noblest estate painters eloquent of the great virtues of the school--a peculiar magic in the interpretation of nature felicity in composition and linear aspect. The plates provide well the Chinese ideas of beauty and style. R. Cortissoz Oxford University Press hardcover

ref. PJH56786Tarasque 1965 - 1971. VG set in slightly rubbed and creased publishers decorated wrappers. Illustrated throughout. The Introduction to Volume Three states that no more than 250 copies of each issue would be printed. An almost complete run lacking only the first issue of the notoriously direct and polemical avant garde small press publication devoted to the 'small poem' the lyrically brief 'post-concrete' successor to the avant garde movement of the 50s. The press was founded by Mills in 1964 when he opened the Trent Bookshop with Martin Parnell. It was named for the legendary fire-breathing monster which tormented the Rhone Valley and drew its inspiration from Wyndham Lewis' Blast. The Press and its founders would drive the recognition of Nottingham as the regional centre of avant garde publishing in the UK. Tarasque would become noted for its professionalism - in direct and strident opposition to the deliberately ephemeral throw-away ramshackle approach of rivals such as Fluxus. Title translation: "Ceremonies and customs which are observed today among the Jews and translated from the Italian of Leon de Modena; with a supplement concerning the sects of the Karaites and the Samaritans of our time. Third edition revised corrected & augmented by a second part entitled 'Comparison of the ceremonies of the Jews and of the discipline of the Church: with a discourse concerning the various masses or liturgies which are in use in all the world' by the Sieur de Simonville." Early publication of the scholar Richard Simon containing his French translation of "Historia degli riti hebraici" by Rabbi Leon of Modena 1574 - 1654 Yehudah Aryeh Mi-Modena. An important source for the history of European Judaism. Modena's work was originally published in Italian first in Paris in 1637 and then in Venice in 1638. Both of these editions included Modena's supplement on the heretical Jewish sects the Karaites and the Samaritans as well as several other chapters on divinations and spells. The book was significant in that was the first work of the modern era aimed at non-Jewish readers to educate them on Jewish religious practice and customs. It was quite popular in the period went through numerous internationally translated editions. Simon's French edition of the work was first issued in 1674 including the supplement by Modena. In 1681 he issued both the second edition of his translation to which was added his work on comparative religion "Comparaison des Ceremonies des Juifs" and that work published separately. It suffices to recall that the work allowed among other things the rediscovery of the East and of non-Christian religions through an almost ethnographic vision which objectively described Judaism independently of the religious prejudices of the 17th century thus inaugurating what will make all the vocation of the great Oratorian. 1747ref. 61155Amsterdam De La Compagnie 1747. 8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Gilt super ex-libris to front board. Wear and scratches to boards primarily affecting front board. Internally nice and clean. 4 363 pp. Beautiful copy of this interesting work on the dramatic life of the 11th Lord Lovat. Although often referred to as the first appearance of this work it is in fact the first French translation of Lord Grange’s Lord Lovat’s legal adviser ‘Memoires of the Life of Simon Fraser Lord Lovat’ from 1746. Dr. Hill Burton notes that this is “the least inaccurate” biographical contemporary account of Lord Lovat which has ever appeared. The 11th Lord Lovat 1667 –1747 also known as Simon Fraser was famous for his involvement in the Jacobite uprisings in Scotland during the 18th century and for being the last man in Britain to be beheaded. Lord Lovat is perhaps most famously known for his support of the Jacobite cause during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. He initially pledged allegiance to the British government but later switched sides to support the claim of Charles Edward Stuart also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie to the British throne. Lovat's decision to join the Jacobites was motivated by a combination of personal ambition and political calculation. Lovat's support for the Jacobites culminated in his participation in the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where the Jacobite forces were decisively defeated by the British government army. After the battle Lovat attempted to evade capture but was eventually apprehended. He was tried for treason and subsequently executed in 1747. hardcover
