A first edition first printing of The Last Cigarette by Simon Gray published by Granta Books London in 2008. A fine copy free from inscriptions in a similarly fine unclipped wrapper. Published in 2004 The Smoking Diaries began when playwright Simon Gray turned sixty-five and started recording his thoughts with little concern for conventional diary form. Digressive candid and mordantly funny it ranges across cigarettes abandoned drinking theatrical triumphs and disasters adultery shame friendship family and ageing. Gray presents himself without vanity transforming anxiety irritation and regret into comedy. Beneath its casualness lies a poignant meditation on memory mortality and the consolations of love and companionship. Granta Books unknown
1872ref. 876F35Philadelphia: Landis Publishing Society 1872 . First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. The first edition of this very scarce American utopia novel regarded by E. F. Bleiler as a work with 'lurid sensationalism and sexual elements with a nasty messianic urge'. The first edition of this very scarce novel which was self-published in 1872 to commercial failure and has been reviewed as one of the worst novels ever written. The novel follows a healer who leads a militant secret society - the Naturalists - who ultimately win a civil war. They then bring about a savage eugenics regime to the world in which they shoot all prisoners of war and institute a totalitarian theocracy decreeing that all must work on pain of death and all money is to be collected by the state.God demonstrates his approval for this state of affairs by sending a plague and famine in which the wicked perish leaving only the Naturalists alive. With fourteen pages of advertisements to the rear. With library label to back strip library bookplate to front pastedown and inscription to front free endpaper.Research librarian and author Jess Nevins termed this 'the worst science fiction novel of the 19th century' due to its 'unreadability cliché and thematic foulness'. 1917ref. 162549London: Harrison & Sons 1917. First edition presentation copy presumably prepared by the author's battalion commander Colonel Walter Gordon Wolrige-Gordon 1861-1938 to be given to close family and friends with an original photographic portrait of him mounted as a frontispiece. Posted to France in November 1915 the author served with the Royal Fusiliers at Festubert and Cambrin before gaining a commission in the Machine Gun Corps and returning home in February 1916. Educated at Radley and Christ Church Oxford Sturges 1893-1971 joined the 19th Public Schools Battalion Royal Fusiliers as a private. His is a no-nonsense but colourful first-hand account largely based on letters home. He was later Political Secretary at the British High Commission in Baghdad. Harrison & Son the printer-publisher generally worked for the War Office and were not known for general publishing so it is quite likely that this scarce work was printed for the author. Sturges's commanding officer W. G. Wolrige-Gordon 1861-1938 previously of the Black Watch had a distinguished military career. Wounded at El-Teb during the Sudan campaign 1884 he saw service on the Nile Expedition 1884-5 Matabeleland 1893-4 and the Boer War. During the First World War he was five times mentioned in despatches. The original photograph of him mounted as frontispiece is the same image that appears in The History of the Royal Fusiliers "U.P.S." 1917. This is affixed to card with a printed caption reading "Some Colonel" and a reference to page 112 where we read: "We staggered on at snail's pace along the Bethune road and I really believe I should never have been able to complete the journey and other men were worse than me. Then to our great relief the Colonel stopped two motor lorries into which we all climbed and they brought us all here. The Colonel himself stayed behind with those who couldn't find room - some Colonel!" Provenance: John Gordon Wolrige-Gordon 1856-1925 W. G.'s brother with his imposing armorial bookplate dated 1909 engraved by the bookplate specialist Charles W. Sherborn. J. G. served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and had a similarly illustrious career: he was on the Tochi and Tirah expeditions 1897 and saw extensive action during the Boer War notably at Modder River Magersfontein and Paaderberg. Octavo 179 x 115 mm. Tissue-guarded original sepia-toned gelatin silver portrait by Turner of St Albans mounted as frontispiece. Small diagram of opposing front lines at p. 102. Presentation binding contemporary of red morocco bevelled boards spine with a gilt castellated fillet on raised bands and at head and tail gilt fillets either side of raised bands black label covers with border of blind paired fillets foliate cornerpieces resembling the flaming grenade cap badge o Royal Fusiliers blind foliate roll to turn-ins pale cream-coloured ribbed endpapers top edge gilt. ref. FRE4Octavo. Brown ink on creamy paper with ornate printed letterhead “American Engraving Co. of Boston Mass.” featuring an advertisement: “Designers & Engravers Fine Half-Tone and Line Plates. Catalogue Magazine Book and Newspaper Illustrations.” 2 pp. With the original matching envelope addressed “Mr. Nazaret Tcheordukian c/o Mr. Marcarian: Frezno California”. Text in Western Armenian. Fold marks light edge wear and toning otherwise a very good letter. An interesting early piece of correspondence between pioneer Armenian immigrants in Massachusetts and California during a formative era for the Armenian-American community. The letter opens with "Dear Nazaret Cheordukian " and goes on to thank him for his previous letter share greetings from friends ask for more news and closes with "Your friend Simon Karapetian”. Simon S. Garabedian Karapetian; 1873–1931 immigrated to Massachusetts from the Ottoman Empire in 1896. Until at least 1916 he worked as a photo engraver at the American Engraving Company in Boston which explains the use of its letterhead. Notably the company’s manager A.J. Kemalyan mentioned on the letterhead was also an Armenian immigrant from the Ottoman Empire. The recipient Nazereth Chordigian Chordikian; 1855-after 1920 immigrated from the Ottoman Empire in the same 1896 as Garabedian. Around 1899 he settled in Fresno California and worked as shoemaker and later as rancher. The "c/o Mr. Marcarian " notation on the envelope almost certainly refers to a member of the well-known Markarian family one of Fresno's earliest and most prominent Armenian fig-growing settlers widely credited with establishing the city’s Armenian agricultural prominence. Henry Markarian 1872–1918 president of the California Fig Growers' Association was referred to as the “Fig King” of the country and at one time the family was the largest fig grower in the United States and possibly in the world see more at Figs Friends of the Fresno Fair - Armenian Exhibit. Fresno California was one of the largest and most important early Armenian-American communities. The first Armenian settlers moved there in the early 1880s from the East Coast when the local population was not more than a thousand people. Later they were accompanied by the settlers from the Armenian territories of the Ottoman Empire. Most of the first Armenians who settled in Fresno lived and worked downtown in what is now referred to as Old Armenian Town. By 1894 the Armenian population in Fresno was 360 a number which grew rapidly with the onset of the Hamidian Massacres in 1895-96. The massacres and persecution of the Armenians by the Turks fueled the growth until it reached about 10000 even before the start of the Armenian Genocide in 1915. During and after the genocide even more Armenians came until the restrictions on immigration in 1921 and 1924 brought this to a virtual end. Los Angeles also became a focus of Armenian immigration and some Armenians from Fresno moved there as well. The number of Armenians in Los Angeles surpassed those in Fresno in 1930 — partly because of the agricultural depression in the valley during the 1920s. Overall the letter reflects the development of the Armenian-American community and the personal connections linking Armenian families in Boston and Fresno and stands as a rare example of early Armenian diasporic correspondence in the United States. unknown
