1841ref. 24093Northampton County: Kleckner Rolf und Williams 1841. Second Printing. Full contemporary leather with a mounted label. Good; binding somewhat "skinned" on the front board; joints wearing. 12mo 839 1 - blank pp. 38 inserted woodblock plates. A massive compendium in three parts devoted to the horse its ailments and cures. The text according to the title appears to contain remedies that have been added by Winter. There is a question as to the number of plates. Tucher #2201 states 39 but OCLC lists anywhere between 16 and 41. The book has the appearance of being carelessly made up; the plates were separately printed on inferior paper and are generic rather than directly relevant to the text there are a number of repeats. They apparently were added to enhance the appeal of the book at the point of sale and therefore do not form part of the collation. Unusual but aimed at profit not information. Scarce. In this volume Fournier sets out to prove that Gutenberg was not the inventor of the printing press by examining the history of printing. He believes that the technology Gutenberg made popular existed long before the German printer's work. "Peter Simon Fournier a French engraver and letter-founder was born at Paris 1712 and died 1768. He studied under Colson painter of the Academy of Saint Luc and devoted himself first to the art of wood-engraving; he afterwards as an engraver on steel rendered himself famous in all countries. In some of his works he seeks to prove that Gutenberg is not the inventor of printing and maintains that long before Gutenberg engraving on wood had been employed for printing images and inscriptions; that during his residence in Strasburg Gutenberg attempted the application of this art to the printing of books and that on his return to Mayence he first printed the Donatus and the Catholicon of Johannes de Janua with engraved and solid blocks. Fournier's ingenious theories were ably refuted by Baron Heinecken in his "Idée Générale d'une Collection complette d'Estamples" Leipsic: 1771" Bigmore & Wyman p 229. J. Barbou unknown books
1826ref. 253Halle: Journal für Chemie und Physik 1826. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. FIRST EDITION of the experimental proof of Ohm's law "the fundamental law of electric circuits" Dibner 63. Ohm "made a study of the laws of galvanic currents and while investigating the relative conductivity of metals finally discovered the relation known as 'Ohm's law' which underlies all electrical theory and measurement. The experimental proof of this law was first published in a paper in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik vol. xlvi. 1826 under the title of Bestimmung des Gesetzes nach welchem Metalle die Contactelektricität leiten" Peck and Colby The New International Encyclopedia. "The following year Ohm published a book entitled Die Galvanische Kette mathematisch bearbeitet Berlin 1827. It contained a theoretic deduction of Ohm's law and became far more widely known than his article of 1826 giving the experimental deduction. In fact his experimental paper was so little known that the impression long prevailed and still exists that he based his law on theory and never established it empirically. This misapprehension accounts perhaps for the unfavourable reception of Ohm's conclusions" Cajori A History of Physics. In: Journal für Chemie und Physik. Hrsg. v. J. S. C. Schweigger u. W. Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 2022 Trade Paperback. 336 pp. The Black Lion is a thoroughly modern counterattacking system that is a nightmare to face. This wild and aggressive line attempts to take away White's initiative from a very early stage and is guaranteed to throw your opponents off balance. The Black Lion is essentially a contemporary and aggressive interpretation of the Philidor Defence 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d6. The Black Lion starts with a slightly different move order 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 and now the lion family splits into two different animals: the risky lion 3.Nbd7 or the tame lion 3.e5. Both treatments are thoroughly investigated in this book. Simon Williams the Ginger GM is the ideal guide to explain how to whip up an extremely dangerous attack using either treatment. Williams is well known for his swashbuckling attacking play and the Black Lion suits his style perfectly. His commentary and annotations are always instructive and entertaining. The effects of the immense waves were felt as far away as France. Barometers in Bogota and Washington D.C. went haywire. Bodies were washed up in Zanzibar. The sound of the island's destruction was heard in Australia and India and on islands thousands of miles away. Most significant of all -- in view of today's new political climate -- the eruption helped to trigger in Java a wave of murderous anti-Western militancy among fundamentalist Muslims one of the first outbreaks of Islamic-inspired killings anywhere. Krakatoa gives us an entirely new perspective on this fascinating and iconic event. Harper Collins hardcover books

An excellent copy. 1999 Hard Cover. 348 pp. In his critically acclaimed Rewrites Neil Simon talked about his beginnings -- his early years of working in television his first real love his first play his first brush with failure and most moving of all his first great loss. Simon's same willingness to open his heart to the reader permeates The Play Goes On. This second act takes the reader from the mid-1970s to the present a period in which Simon wrote some of his most popular and critically acclaimed plays including the Brighton Beach trilogy and Lost in Yonkers for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. Simon experienced enormous professional success during this time but in his personal life he struggled to find that same sense of happiness and satisfaction. After the death of his first wife he and his two young daughters left New York for Hollywood. There he remarried and when that foundered he remarried again. Told with his characteristic humor and unflinching sense of irony The Play Goes On is rich with stories of how Simon's art came to imitate his life. Simon's forty-plus plays make up a body of work that is a long-running memoir in its own right yet here in a deeper and more personal book than his first volume Simon offers a revealing look at an artist in crisis but still able and willing to laugh at himself. An English translation of the French play which was suppressed by legal authorities in New York City after fewer than two weeks at the Comedy Theatre in 1928 after being deemed an 'immoral' play. Drama critic Alexander Woollcott who called it "so beautiful a play. that it cannot fail. But. there is always the chance that New York will fail." later commented that the play was censored "in almost medieval secrecy. by the murderously effective and to my notion entirely vicious law." The play examines the world of prostitution in a controversial manner similar to Shaw's Mrs Warren's Profession which suffered the same treatment by authorities. This censorship inspired an outpouring of equally controversial dramatic productions leading to the Wales Padlock Law of 1927 which allowed playwrights producers and actors to be criminally prosecuted for their roles in these allegedly immoral works. Maya was the first play against which the law was used Wainscott The Emergence of the Modern American Theater 1914-1929 p. 76. This publication in book form followed the suppression of the play and the jacket illustration by Darcy this is probably Art Deco illustrator Lyse Darcy who produced a number of well-known advertisements for the French cosmetics company Guerlain showing two pairs of hands suggestively reaching upward towards the title character seems to be an open act of defiance against the law. The play inspired a film of the same name in 1949 starring Jean-Pierre Grenier and Viviane Romance which was directed by Raymond Bernard. Robert M. McBride & Company / J.J. Garrison-Morton #4985: "Translation of original 1911 French." Binet-Simon Scale: "A test for determining the relative development of intelligence especially of children consisting of a series of questions and tasks graded with reference to the ability of the normal child to deal with them at successive age levels." "The Stanford - Binet Intelligence Scales or more commonly the Stanford-Binet is an individually administered intelligence test that was revised from the original Binet-Simon Scale by Lewis M. Terman a psychologist at Stanford University. The Stanford - Binet Intelligence Scale is now in its fifth edition SB5 and was released in 2003. It is a cognitive ability and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual deficiencies in young children. The test measures five weighted factors and consists of both verbal and nonverbal subtests. The five factors being tested are knowledge quantitative reasoning visual-spatial processing working memory and fluid reasoning. The development of the Stanford - Binet initiated the modern field of intelligence testing and was one of the first examples of an adaptive test. The test originated in France then was revised in the United States. It was initially created by the French psychologist Alfred Binet who following the introduction of a law mandating universal education by the French government began developing a method of identifying "slow" children for their placement in special education programs rather than removing them to asylums as "sick". As Binet indicated case studies might be more detailed and helpful but the time required to test many people would be excessive. In 1916 at Stanford University the psychologist Lewis Terman released a revised examination which became known as the "Stanford - Binet test". Chicago Medical Book Co hardcover books
