"This catalogue offers the opportunity to discover the complete oeuvre of one of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century: Simon Hantaï. From the first paintings after Hantaï's arrival in Paris in 1948 to the pliage paintings this publication which covers sixty years of the painter's life and accompanies the first retrospective of Hantaï's work since 1876 reveals the complexity and extreme diversity of his creation: from the Surrealist paintings to the writing-paintings from the Mariales the first series of works created using the pliage or folding method to the Laissées. Hantaï's approach is analyzed at each stage of its development. Essays accounts by those closest to the artist and a detailed chronology as well as numerous hitherto unpublished illustrations complement this first major reference work on the artist."--Page 4 of cover. 2014ref. 211768New York: The Morgan Library & Museum 2014. Hardcover. As new. Quarto. Hardcover. Green cloth boards in illustrated jacket. 163 pages : color illustrations ; 30 cm. "With Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet Théodore Rousseau 1812–67 ranks as one of the preeminent masters of the Barbizon School a group of nineteenth-century French artists whose preferred subject was the primeval Forest of Fontainebleau. The Barbizon School painters were greatly influenced by the Romantic movement producing works inspired by the powerful forces of nature. Surprisingly despite his pivotal role in French art and his profound impact on the development of landscape painting Rousseau has never before been the subject of a monographic exhibition in the United States. Composed of seventy works from private and public collections including the Morgan Library & Museum this exhibition considers the artist's wide-ranging achievements as a draftsman and his particular approach to the open-air oil sketch. It traces Rousseau's path to Barbizon from his early oil sketches in the Ile-de-France Auvergne and Normandy to his mature works in the Forest of Fontainebleau. Rousseau's works—some bucolic and evocative of a simpler pre-industrial age others brooding moody and redolent of Romanticism or testaments to the haunting majesty of the natural world—are both appealing and instructive. Collectively this selection chronicles Rousseau's artistic practice and highlights his contribution to the shifting conception of landscape in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. The show explores the range of techniques and handling of media as well as the sense of poetic melancholy that permeates Rousseau's art. "--. The Morgan Library & Museum hardcover books

A beautifully illustrated look at how the Sussex landscape has inspired creativity across the centuries reassessing the rich artistic lives and work of British artists and writers connected with the area. Sussex is a county defined by its iconic chalk-cliff coastline and the rolling expanse of the South Downs to the North. This enduring landscape has inspired artists and writers across the centuries most notably in the twentieth century when Sussex was home to leading artists and writers of the day. While some artists found solace and reflection in the landscape for others it provided the vital space to explore different ways of living and artistic innovation. Following in the footsteps of these artists this book tells a fascinating story of an area that continues to inspire. Reassessing the rich artistic lives and work of British artists connected with the area the book features work by leading artists including J. M. W. Turner William Nicholson Vanessa Bell Duncan Grant Ivon Hitchens Eric Ravilious and Edward Burra alongside new work by contemporary artists. As a commitment to understanding the landscape is being discussed with increasing urgency this book offers a moment to consider the work of those who have gone before and have captured a changing world. Bound in black cloth with illustrated jacket. v 246 pages : illustrations chiefly color portraits ; 30 cm. "One day in London in 1770 the polymath Georg Christoph Lichtenberg 1742-1799 wrote: 'What a work could be written on Shakespeare Hogarth and Garrick! There is something similar in the genius of all three.' Two-and-a-half centuries on this book takes up the challenge. William Hogarth 1697-1764 and David Garrick 1717-1779 consciously associated themselves with Shakespeare throughout their careers. The three of them together embody the age-old relationship between plays painting and performance that shaped in particular the formulation of history painting by the Académie royale in Paris in the seventeenth century. History painting was identified as the highest form of art: a picture interpreting just a few lines of a revered text. In Britain Hogarth's David Garrick as Richard III transformed those ideas because although it looked like a history painting it was also a portrait of an actor in performance. With it Hogarth established the genre of theatrical portraiture and resolved a perpetual complaint about art in Britain: that there was no patronage of history painting and that all the British were interested in was portraits. This book offers a fresh examination of theatrical portraits -- best understood as a distinctly British kind of history painting -- through close analysis of the pictures and the actual texts used in performance recovering a sense of their contemporary reception and the context within which they were made. It also highlights the significance of Shakespeare Hogarth and Garrick within the European Enlightenment and the rise of Romanticism."--from the inside front flap. Art of the Baga: A Drama of Cultural Reinvention traces the art and cultural history of these very special African people from their legendary flight from the mystical highlands of the interior of Guinea to the coast in their attempt to conserve their own religious ritual to the eventual destruction of their traditions at mid century with the conversion to Islam and with independence from France the establishment of the Republic of Guinea under an iconoclastic Marxist regime. In the book the Baga voice is heard prominently in the direct testimony of three Baga writers and forty Baga consultants of all ages and background experience from ten-year-old boys to elders and ritual leaders of over 100 years of age. Artistic creation and reinvention form the core of issues raised throughout the art historical drama. Museum for African Art / Prestel hardcover books

Grey cloth boards with gray lettering on spine color illustrated dust jacket ix 207 pp. profusely illustrated with 179 color and countless bw plates. Published to accompany an exhibition held at the National Gallery in Washington DC. The Forest of Fontainebleau located about 50 miles southeast of Paris held a singular place in 19th-century art. Variously called "savage" "wild" "romantic" and "beautiful" by visitors Fontainebleau's topography was viewed in many ways that reflected the sensibilities of the time. This is the first English-language publication to examine the significance of the region to the plein-air tradition in France. The book highlights four pivotal figures in the evolution of landscape painting: Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot The;odore Rousseau Jean-François Millet and Claude Monet. It integrates into this history the photographers who worked at Fontainebleau including Eugène Cuvelier and Gustave Le Gray and explores the role the forest played in the development of early photography. It also considers the reception of paintings of Fontainebleau at the Salons and the influence of Fontainebleau on the advent of Impressionism. "Taryn Simon's 'The Color of a Flea's Eye' presents a history of the New York Public Library's Picture Collection -- a legendary trove of more than one million prints photographs postcards posters and images from disused books and periodicals. Since its inception in 1915 the Picture Collection has been a vital resource for writers historians artists filmmakers fashion designers and advertising agencies. In her work The Picture Collection 2012-20 Simon born 1975 highlighted the impulse to organize visual information and pointed to the invisible hands behind seemingly neutral systems of image gathering. Each of Simon's photographs is made up of an array of images selected from a given subject folder such as Chiaroscuro Handshaking Haircombing Express Highways Financial Panics Israel and Beards and Mustaches. In artfully overlapped compositions only slices of the individual images are visible each fragment suggesting its whole. Simon sees this extensive archive of images as the precursor to internet search engines. Such an unlikely futurity in the past is at the core of the Picture Collection. The digital is foreshadowed in the analogue at the same time that history -- its classifications its contents -- seems the stuff of projection. Simon spent years sifting through letters memos and records that reveal an untold story between the library and artists media government and a broader public. These documents also divulge the removal and transfer of photographs from the democratically circulating picture-collection folders to the photography collection in the late 1980s when their marketplace value became apparent. Simon's selection of photographs from these transfers highlights gender immigration race and economy in America alongside the technical development of photography."
