Moses Maimonides Rambam was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child due to Almohad persecution of Jews. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge and explaining away anthropomorphic and antropopathic terms in the Bible. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. 1902ref. 18679Breslau: Schlesische Verlagsanstalt v. S.Schottlaender 1902. Softcover. g. 8vo. 344pp. Illustrated wrappers. Work on the Talmud and Rabbinic opposition to it especially Leon de Modena "Kol Sakal". Here Stein refutes Reggio's view that most of the Talmudic ordinances were not intended for perpetual observance; and were practised only by the rigorous Pharisees. According to Reggio it was not until much later that the casuists "posekim" established such ordinances as a part of the Law. Consequently Modena was in many cases wrong in attacking the Talmudists. Reggio's theory has been refuted by Simon Stern in the preface to his German translation of Modena's works published under the title "Der Kampf des Rabbiners Gegen den Talmud im XVII. Jahrhundert." 2010ref. 103919New Castle Delaware Pinner and London England: Oak Knoll Press The Private Libraries Association The British Library 2010. Hardcover dust jacket. 7.25 x 10.75 inches. Hardcover dust jacket. 224 pages. The 1860s are considered the "Golden Age" of illustrated periodicals a time when the "knockabout" humor of the 1840s which was dominated by illustrators such as Cruikshank Doyle and Phiz gave way to a more considered style grounded in serious artistic principles allowing for deeper expression and emotion in artistic output. The first book of its kind Illustrated Periodicals of the 1860s focuses extensively on the illustrated magazine as a distinct form. Illustrated Periodicals provides a new and informative approach to the study of "sixties" periodicals revealing the previously unstudied area of the complex interrelationships between the various parties involved in the production of these magazines: publishers editors artists engravers and authors. The book considers the effects of these relationships on creative output both artistic and literary and in so doing provides a detailed historical reconstruction of the essential character of the periodicals of that era. The book includes over 120 reproductions of engravings and preparatory drawings almost all of them original size. Additionally the text contains two appendices; the first includes a reflection of the work that goes into collecting and researching these periodicals. The second lists the key illustrators engravers publishers editors as well as magazines mentioned throughout the text each including a brief description. This work is an informative and colorful choice for those interested in the history of periodicals the production of magazines and art.
