Very gentle bumps to head and tail of spine. Mild dust-spotting to text block. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is firm and sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This addition to our popular Guides for the Perplexed series tackles a subject that is enjoying renewed debate: Christianity along with Judaism and Islam claims that the universe is not a brute fact. It is 'created'. But what do we mean by 'creation' Do we mean that the universe is 'designed' Is it the product of an evolutionary process How are creatures related to God and does God act within creation Simon Oliver begins with the background to the Christian theology of creation in Greek philosophy and the Old Testament. This provides a route into understanding the claim that we are part of a created order that is also the theatre of God's providential action. He examines different understandings of creation including creation out of nothing and the analogy of being with close reference to the work of patristic and medieval theologians such as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. This leads to an historical overview of the relationship between theological philosophical and scientific approaches to creation in the modern period. Some of the ethical issues concerning humanity's place within and treatment of creation and our environment are also examined. A distinctive yet traditional theology of creation is proposed focused on the concepts of gift and participation as ways of understanding more fully the meaning and implications of the claim that the universe is created.Publisher. 8 3/4" X 5 3/4". xiii 209pp. Very minor shelf wear to covers corners and edges of paper over boards. First published in 1676 Degge's Counsellor remained the preeminent practical manual for the English clergy and their legal advisors for nearly 150 years. Written by a prominent barrister and Royalist judge rather than a theologian the work is celebrated for its pragmatic secular approach to church law. It was instrumental in redefining tithes-originally a religious offering-as a strictly enforceable legal property right under common and statute law. This 1681 edition was published during a period of intense legal refinement following the Restoration. It includes substantial additions over the first edition reflecting the evolving court precedents that sought to stabilize the Church of England's financial footing. A critical feature of this edition is the "Catalogue of Dissolved Monasteries" which identified lands exempt from tithe payments-a vital reference tool for 17th and 18th-century land disputes. This copy features a notable generational provenance within a documented London legal family. The rear endleaf contains the inscription of Thomas Adlington fl. 1765 an attorney active in the mid-18th century. The front free endpaper and leaf Ee2v bear the signatures of his successor Thomas Adlington fl. 1795 a partner in the prom. unknown books
