1877rif. h45876NY: New York 1877. Fair. 16.5 x 11.5 fair copy with edgewear multiple areas are taped some short tears now matted in 20x16" mat. Great cover image of the riots in Pittsburgh and one other double page with multiple images of the labor unrest in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The format owes much to that of Harper's Weekly or Frank Leslie journals. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 began in July when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad cut wages for the third time in a year prompting workers in Martinsburg West Virginia to walk off the job. The strike spread rapidly along the rail lines to Baltimore Chicago St. Louis and beyond becoming the nation's first major nationwide labor uprising. Pittsburgh saw the worst violence: after Philadelphia militia fired on a crowd killing about twenty people enraged citizens burned the Pennsylvania Railroad's roundhouse depot and over a thousand rail cars. Federal troops were deployed to crush the strike and by early August it had collapsed leaving roughly a hundred dead nationwide and marking a turning point in American labor relations.
