Aristotle's 'Posterior Analytics' is a treatise on scientific demonstration and knowledge part of the Organon in which he sets out the conditions under which a syllogism can produce genuine scientific knowledge rather than merely probable or dialectical conclusions. It examines the nature of demonstrative proof definition and first principles arguing that all demonstration must ultimately rest on premises that are themselves true primary and known immediately rather than derived. This copy is inscribed by Robert Purves Hardie 1864–1942 a Scottish philosopher mathematician and translator best known for his translation of Aristotle's Physics in the Oxford translation of Aristotle's works. 1878rif. 1008308vo pamphlet two parts removed disbound XLII 122 62 pp. Pamphlet is removed but text is complete first signature almost detached from block normal aging and toning. This work contains a massive amount of information relating to using railroads to transport mail across the continent. As part of the analysis in supporting railway mail service the special commission provides charts that show profits and expenses for 114 railroad companies and postal statistics between 1789 and 1877. The costs relating to delivering mail by rail are shown in a few ways including the transport costs per foot of train. Interestingly the pamphlet touches on the skills and importance of postal clerks and suggests that they should not be fired except for cause. Government Printing Office,
