1979réf. 508662Mouton 1979. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. FINE/NEAR FINE. xxxvii 198pp. 8vo sewn binding in green cloth white stamped spine lettering. Exceedingly clean and sharp; DJ with just a bit of rubbing to the tips. 'Recently a great deal of attention has been directed at the Siwan al-Hikmah of Abü Salaimãn as-Sijistani as-Sijazi by some of our most outstanding Orientalists. This growing interest has focused on its importance for the history of Arabic philosophy especially in connection with the Greeks and has been manifested in a corresponding curiousity as to what its contents may be. Franz Ro-senthal has spoken of its crucial importance for Graeco-Arabic studies. Jörg Kraemer who demonstrated in a brilliant fashion that the Homeric citations in the Siwan al-Hikmah were in fact the vapar attributed to Menander has described the text in equally strong terms. However in spite of the fact that a number of good manuscripts of abridged or selected versions exist Muntakhab no complete copy of the original Siwan al-Hikmah is as yet known. The Muntakhab SiwÄn al-Hikmah dates from approximately A. D. 1200 whereas the original is of nearly the same date as the Fihrist of Ibn an-Nadim written in about 377/987 - or perhaps even earlier. While scholars wait for the complete original text to be recovered and made available it has seemed appropriate to the editor that a text of the Muntakhab together with some explication to assist in its understanding be supplied; the present volume is intended to provide immediate access to this critical text.' This stirring poignant novel based on real historical events that made of actual people true heroes unfolds the tragedy that befell the Armenian people in the dark year of 1915. The Great War is raging through Europe and in the ancient mountainous lands southwest of the Caspian Sea the Turks have begun systematically to exterminate their Christian subjects. Unable to deny his birthright or his people one man Gabriel Bagradianborn an Armenian educated in Paris married to a Frenchwoman and an officer doing his duty as a Turkish subject in the Ottoman armywill strive to resist death at the hands of his blood enemy by leading 5000 Armenian villagers to the top of Musa Dagh the mountain of Moses.
