Wrappers frayed at spine; light dampstaining at margins of a portion of the leaves at rear. Good. An early catalogue of the collections of the East-India Marine Society of Salem recording the maritime journals and objects gathered by Salem captains and merchants during the city's great period of overseas trade. Founded in 1799 by captains and supercargoes who had sailed beyond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn the Society required its members to contribute to a cabinet of "natural and artificial curiosities" the collection from which the present Peabody Essex Museum developed. The Society moved the collection into the newly built East India Marine Hall in 1825 and this expanded catalogue appeared only six years later. The volume includes the Society's act of incorporation bylaws lists of members and officers a catalogue of its manuscript journals of voyages and an extensive catalogue of the museum. The voyage journals occupy pages 33-42 and document Salem voyages to ports throughout Asia and the Indian Ocean; the balance of the catalogue records the ethnographic natural-history and other objects brought home by the Society's members. This was a substantially enlarged successor to the Society's 1821 catalogue which ran to 100 pages; the 1831 edition extends to 178 pages and was followed by a further supplement in 1837. A national bibliography of American library catalogues records copies of the 1831 edition at only a small group of institutional collections.1 1 Robert Singerman American Library Book Catalogues 1801-1874: A National Bibliography Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 1996 94. . 1915ref. 224781915. Polk George Washington Jr. Havana and rural Cuba photo archive 1915 documents Cuba through the viewpoint of an American military traveler during the Platt Amendment era when U.S. power shaped Cuban sovereignty port security naval access and commercial movement. The photographs record ships in Havana Harbor coastal fortifications rural dwellings Cuban farmers agricultural landscapes and colonial plazas providing insight into how U.S. military personnel visually encountered Cuba just before American entry into World War I. The Platt Amendment gave the United States broad authority to intervene in Cuban affairs and required Cuba to lease land for naval stations remaining central to U.S.-Cuba relations until its repeal in 1934; this archive therefore places vernacular travel photography within a larger framework of military oversight and commercial access. Polk George Washington Jr. Havana Cuba vernacular photo collection. Havana Cuba: unpublished December 1915. Twenty-eight silver gelatin photographs pasted to album pages with some loose or partially detached ranging from approximately 2 x 2½ inches to 4½ x 3½ inches many with handwritten ink annotations dated December 22 to 29 1915. The images include vessels anchored in Havana Harbor harbor views from on board ship Morro Castle and other coastal fortification views colonial civic plazas local laborers and civilians thatched rural huts or bohíos sugarcane fields and agricultural scenes captioned "Orange Trees & Coconut Palms Near Havana." One photograph is captioned "Cuban Farmer & Son Near Havana Dec 22 1915" giving the archive direct documentary value for rural family life and American observation of Cuban agricultural communities. Other captions identify boats as "U.S.C. 5th Protectors off Havana" and refer to the United Fruit Company steamer Abangarez on the Havana-Colon route; the Abangarez was a United Fruit Company passenger and cargo vessel completed in 1909 and later brought under United States registry during World War I. The photographs combine military commercial and rural subjects in a compact record of U.S.-Cuban contact. Polk's annotations and the repeated Potchernick-Birdsong Co. Kodak Place San Antonio Texas stamps on versos indicate that the images were developed in the United States after the trip or sent home for processing preserving the path by which overseas military travel became a personal photographic record. Polk's later military service is supported by burial and veterans' records identifying George Washington Polk Jr. as born May 13 1889 died July 27 1976 and buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery; the supplied description identifies him as later a Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps and instructor in the early U.S. Air Force. Most photographs lightly pasted along one edge to scrapbook leaves with some detached or partially affixed; a few corner creases otherwise sharp images with strong contrast good to very good overall. 1942ref. 90081942. Minnich W. H. World War II V Mail correspondence to his family 1943-1945 documents the military communication system that connected American service personnel overseas with relatives on the home front while conserving critical transportation capacity. Written by Captain W. H. Minnich during the final years of the war the letters record his personal responses to prolonged separation the continuing campaigns against Germany and Japan and his anticipation of demobilization. The archive reveals how V Mail operated in practice through standardized microphotographically reproduced messages carried in dated transmittal envelopes providing primary-source evidence for the study of wartime morale family correspondence military postal systems and an officer's changing expectations as Allied victory approached. Introduced in the United States on June 15 1942 V Mail reduced standardized letter sheets onto 16 mm microfilm so that correspondence could travel without displacing military supplies; a single reel could contain approximately 1500 letters while saving about 98 percent of the cargo space required by conventional mail. Minnich W. H. V Mail correspondence. Various locations: War and Navy Department postal system 1943-1945. Supplied information variously reports 42 and 54 letters each approximately 4 by 5 inches accompanied by original transmittal envelopes bearing postmarked dates. The correspondence is primarily personal and addressed to members of Minnich's family. In a letter dated December 18 1944 he writes "This war is a terrible thing and I for one shall be glad when its all over" followed by "It won't be long until it gets cold again and I hope by then the Germans will have enough." On May 21 1945 shortly after the end of the war in Europe but while fighting continued in the Pacific he writes "All I want now is for the war to end and then an early return home. I hope to do that in another year after all these Germans and Japs can't fight forever." Together these passages trace the emotional progression from uncertainty during the European campaign to qualified relief and continued impatience for the end of the Pacific war. A complete chronological listing cannot be prepared from the supplied summary because individual dates and contents for the remaining letters have not been provided. V Mail transformed handwritten messages into reduced photographic facsimiles that were transported on microfilm and enlarged for delivery allowing military authorities to combine logistical efficiency with continued correspondence between the fighting fronts and home. The surviving envelopes preserve postmarks and transmission evidence that enhance the archive's value for reconstructing sequence location and wartime postal handling. Minor handling wear consistent with mailing and wartime use; overall very good condition. A sustained officer's correspondence documenting both the machinery of World War II military communications and the personal strain of awaiting victory and return. unknown books

1944ref. 235151944. Women's Royal Naval Service photograph album documenting life at HMS Royal Arthur the Royal Navy's training camp establishment at Skegness where a prewar holiday camp was transformed into a military training and accommodation center during the Second World War. Named individuals throughout with handwritten identifications the album follows Dorothy Gardner and other Wrens serving in the expanding wartime navy while also capturing the theatrical entertainment routines featuring cross dressed men and ceremonial duties that shaped daily life away from the front lines. Beyond its images of uniformed women the album records a military community of offices dining halls stages chalets and training facilities that supported Britain's wartime naval operations at a camp which was bombed by German aircraft on February 21st 1942. Photo album of approximately 73 silver gelatin photographs various sizes ranging from 1.5" x 1.5" to 8.5" x 6.5" chiefly HMS Royal Arthur Camp Skegness Lincoln and other British locations c. 1944. Large group portraits are captioned "H.M.S. Royal Arthur July 1944" showing rows of Wrens in naval caps and dark uniforms. Several photos show soldiers by artillery navy men on small military boats and canons. Multiple group photos show men and women in Navy uniform. The photographs place women within the essential but often overlooked machinery of wartime naval administration including supply clerical work communications camp management transport and food service. Captions identify Peggy Marjorie Dorothy Margaret Joan Harry Blake Farnsworth Bernard Cavanagh Dennis Leo Dugay May of Glasgow Geoffrey Roy Bluemel Mrs. Thomason of Leigh Pat Taylor Nancy and Cynthia of HMS Ariel. Additional off camp photographs show bicycle outings skating scenes shipboard snapshots barracks and chalet interiors social gatherings and a guard of honour at Lincoln near the cathedral. Particularly notable is the album's extensive documentation of entertainment and morale-building activities. Several photographs are captioned "Up Spirits" and "concerts at H.M.S. Royal Arthur" revealing an active performance culture within the camp. Sailors appear in theatrical productions alongside women in costume while musicians perform with accordions and pianos before assembled audiences. One series features actor Charles Redgrave "with the girls" and another photograph captures the wartime tradition of gender-crossing stage entertainment in which male servicemen performed in women's clothing for camp audiences. These scenes provide an unusually vivid record of military leisure performance and social life within a wartime naval community. HMS Royal Arthur was bombed by German aircraft on 21 February 1942 The album therefore records daily life at a site that was both a military workplace and a target of wartime attack. By 1944 the Women's Royal Naval Service had expanded dramatically from its earlier First World War role with women serving in hundreds of naval occupations while remaining largely excluded from combat at sea. The photographs capture that transformation through named individuals workplace groups ceremonial events friendships and recreational activities illustrating how women became integral to the operation of Britain's wartime navy. The album documents the social world created when thousands of servicewomen and servicemen lived and worked together inside one of Britain's largest naval shore establishments. Sailors Wrens airmen Canadians civilians performers and local acquaintances appear throughout its pages creating a rich portrait of wartime relationships and community formation. Album shows handling wear page wear and a few removed photographs; handwritten captions remain extensive and legible throughout. Overall in good condition. An unusually dense and highly personal record of women's naval service wartime labor military entertainment gender performance and everyday life at HMS Royal Arthur during the Second World War. unknown books
