1928réf. 37428Argentina: El Grafico 1928. 1928. Good. - A 12-1/8 inch high by 8-3/4 inch wide leaf from the Argentinian sports magazine "El Grafico" with a full-page illustration of the American aviator & explorer Carl Ben Eielson in the year he and Sir George Hubert Wilkins flew from North America over the North Pole to Europe. Eielson attired in a heavy coat over pilot's leather pants and wearing a leather pilot's hat is pictured against a background of snow next to the polar explorer George Hubert Wilkins. The corners are slightly creased and there are stab-marks along the page's right edge. A color illustration of the "Primera Division del Club Atletico Boca Juniors" soccer team is portrayed on the verso. Good. The American aviator bush pilot and explorer Carl Ben Eielson 1897-1929 learned to fly in the U.S. Army Air Service in 1917 and served in the Signal Corps during the First World War. While supporting himself as a Capitol police officer while studying law at Georgetown Law School he met Daniel Sutherland then Alaska's delegate to Congress who convinced him to move there. Eielson flew the first air mail in Alaska from Fairbanks to McGrath in 1924. In 1927 he explored the drift ice north of Alaska with the Australian Polar explorer George Hubert Wilkins and was the first to land a "land plane" onto drift ice. In 1928 Eielsen flew from Point Barrow over the North Pole to Spitsbergen a 20 hour flight. He accompanied Wilkins on his Antarctic Expedition in 1928 and they were thus the first to have flown over both polar regions. Eielson established Alaskan Airways shortly before he and his mechanic Earl Borland died in a crash in Siberia as they attempted to evacuate crew and merchandise from the cargo ship the Nanuk trapped in the ice at North Cape. Founded by Constancio Vigil in 1919 "El Grafico" was an Argentine sports magazine which started as a weekly newspaper before subsequently turning exclusively to the coverage of sports. One of the most highly regarded sports magazines in Latin America it came to earn the nickname "La Biblia de deporte" "The Bible of sports". Argentina: El Grafico, [1928]. hardcover
1973réf. 35021Washington DC: January 12th 1973. 1973. Fine. - 100 words typed on a cream-colored 10-1/2 inch high by 9 inch wide sheet of "Department of the Air Force Office of the Chief of Staff" letterhead with the address and the Department of Defense seal printed in blue at the top. Signed "H. M. Wade". The bottom right corner is lightly bumped. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. Wade replies to a letter from Congressman Seymour Halpern soliciting his personal thoughts on achieving a lasting world peace. Wade assures Halpern of his desire for a just and lasting world peace "however although your request was for my personal 'views or formulas' any comments by me on this critically important subject through other than official channels would be highly inappropriate." Horace Milton Wade 1916-2001 saw active service in World War II and the Vietnam War. In 1968 he was designated commander in chief United States Air Forces in Europe and was promoted to general. The following year he was appointed chief of staff Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and in 1972 he became Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force--the post he held when this letter was written. The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Washington, DC: January 12th, 1973. unknown
1949réf. 29031New York: FAR Gallery 1949. 1949. Fine. - sc 4 fine bright hand-colored lithographs depicting events in the history and birth of flight. Each of these beautiful prints is lithographed on 8 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide cardstock. There is a little minor smudging at the bottom of the lithograph depicting "The Vauxhall Balloon" else the prints are in fine condition. The images respectively depict: The "Descent near Philadelphia Phil. 1850" of a single pink balloon topped with a red & yellow floral accent and horizontal red stripe. A yellow and blue flag and the American flag fly from either side of the yellow gondola wich carries a single person. "The Vauxhall Balloon Phil. 1850" depicts a single red & yellow striped balloon. Two flags fly from the sides of the purple ribboned gondola carrying 6 people. The "Descent Near Easton Pennsylvania" depicts a shredded dark & light blue balloon. The basket gondola carries a single man who holds out his top hat. American flags fly from both sides of the gondola. "Mr. Cocking's Parachute Phil. 1850" depicts the Nasau balloon with Cocking's parachute attached at the bottom. A watercolorist and amateur scientist Robert Cocking designed his parachute based on that of Garnerin's. The blue & yellow striped balloon which ascended from London's Vauxhall Gardens in 1837 carries 2 passengers in its gondola. The yellow red and blue inverted cone parachute attached under the balloon's gondola carried Cocking aloft in its own basket gondola. Cocking's experiment ended in tragedy. Releasing his parachute at a height of 5000 feet it failed due to a mechanical error and Cocking plummeted to his death. A rare group of prints examples of which are housed at the National Air and Space Museum. New York: FAR Gallery, 1949. unknown
