1933réf. 64314Dresden Germany: Bilderstelle Lohse 1933. Oblong folio. 13.5 x 9.5 in. 36 leaves unnumbered printed in sepia on tan paper. With 155 of 156 silver gelatin cigarette card photos neatly mounted all w/ brown printed borders 1 tipped-in raised embossed bronze-foil reproducing the Naval Airshipmen’s Memorial in Wielhelmshaven 1 colour map text maps photo plate of Hermann Goering colour plates preserving original tissue guards. Photo-illustrated flexible covers red spine red lettering cover art of Graf Zeppelin flying over a steamship minor edgewear slight scuffing minor wear & bumping at lower right corner still a VG- exemplar. First edition of this follow-up cigarette card collectors photo album for the around-the-World voyages of the Graf Zeppelin LZ 127 along with opening chapter devoted to World War I Zeppelin operations. This album focuses as well on the 1930-1931 Arctic Voyages across the Polar Ice Archangel and over the Soviet Union including aerial views of Leningrad as well as traveling over Norway Sweden Denmark and Iceland -- the Polar flight was largely paid for with approximately 50000 stamp collector letters; the Mediterranean flights to Rome North Africa Palestine and back; as well as airship trips to Switzerland Austria Spain Italy and Germany from 1929-1933. One very nice series of images capture the opening of the transatlantic trips to South America 1931-1932. This album also chillingly represents the first ties of the Graf Zeppelin as a Nazi propaganda tool soon after the National Socialists came to power in 1933 with the colour plate here illustrating the new Nazi Government markings and the flight over Nuremberg for the notorious May 1 1933 Nazi May Day celebration. From 1931-1936 the Graf Zeppelin would cross the South Atlantic 136 times as part of the first regularly scheduled nonstop intercontinental airline service in World History. Following the 1937 Hindenberg disaster the Graf Zeppelin only made one additional flight June 18 1937 and was later broken up in March 1940 at the orders of Hermann Goering. Oblong 8vo. 7.75 x 5.6 in. 77 leaves unnumbered. w/ thick black paper stock dividing leaves of printed text facing 25 silver gelatin photographs including photo title all sized 5 x 7 in. Original textured flexible black paper cover post-binder 2 nickel-plated screw-posts at gutter margin silver title lettering stamped on front cover yapp fore-edges still a NF copy preserved with the original mailing envelope from photographer Ernest de Grave in Pawtucket RI to Jack E. McCoskey Sr. 1924-2004 who finished flight training by January 1944 joined the squadron in England and was discharged in Dec. 1945 later becoming an industrial tool die designer for Studebaker. First edition of this exceedingly scarce World War II squadron history for the 370th Fighter Squadron a US Army Air Forces Unit assigned to the 359th Fighter Group in early 1943 which trained in the United States and then was deployed to England where they trained and flew out of the RAF Station 133 at East Wretham. As part of the VIII Fighter Command they provided support during the D-Day operations and escorted bombers. The flight officers and personnel depicted here for the two months of Sept. - Oct. 1944 chiefly escorted waves of bombers to oil refineries marshaling yards and flight operations over Ludwigshafen Stuttgart Frankfurt Berlin Merseburg and Brux. Of particular interest in this souvenir album are photos depicting not only the P-51 Mustangs flown by the 370th Fighter Squadron but their range of pilots and support personnel. Of special interest is one of the first photos in the album depicting the “Flying Officers” which shows Jack McCoskey seated in the same row as Quadruple Ace fighter pilot Ray Shuey Wetmore 1923-1951 credited with destroying 21.25 enemy aircraft over Europe in aerial combat who later died in a flying accident while piloting an F-84 Thunderbolt. Others included Colonel George “Pop” Doersch 1921-1994 who flew 158 combat missions and credited with destroying 12 German fighters placing him as the 2nd highest ace in the group; Lt. Col. Daniel McKee was also a 370th Fighter Squadron leader and ace racking up kills against Luftwaffe aircraft. De Grave 1918-2006 returned to his work as a lace maker with the American Textile Co. following his time in the US Army Air Force as 370th Fighter Squadron photographer. No copies in Worldcat.
