1949rif. 164751949. Original press photograph of British aviator Richarda Morrow-Tait 1923-1982 the first woman to pilot an aircraft around the world dated August 19 1949 the day she completed her historic circumnavigation at London's Croydon Airport. Departing Britain on August 18 1948 with navigator Michael Townsend Morrow-Tait undertook a journey that lasted one year and one day overcoming mechanical failures difficult weather conditions and a serious crash in Alaska. Initially flying a Percival Proctor IV named Thursday's Child she continued her journey in a replacement aircraft Next Thursday's Child a Vultee BT-13 Valiant after raising funds to resume the expedition. Her successful return established a landmark in women's aviation history during the early postwar expansion of civilian flight. Original black-and-white gelatin silver press photograph August 19 1949. Measures 7 x 8½ inches. Depicts Morrow-Tait seated in the cockpit of Next Thursday's Child. The original press caption printed beside the image reads: "British round-the-world flyer returned home 8/19 to Britain which she left just a year and a day ago. Her flight to London's Croydon Airport ended the 1st single-engine round-the-world flight by a woman at point where she started it." Pencil inscriptions and a press stamp appear on the verso documenting the photograph's circulation as editorial material. The caption dates the image to the completion of her flight and identifies both the aviation record and the airport at which she concluded her journey. Morrow-Tait began her circumnavigation at age 24 having accumulated approximately 85 hours of flying experience. Her route took her across Europe and Asia to Japan Alaska and North America before returning across the Atlantic to Britain. Following her crash in Alaska she spent several months securing financing and a replacement aircraft making the successful completion of her flight particularly notable. Her achievement followed the pioneering long-distance flights of women aviators such as Amelia Earhart whose attempted circumnavigation ended in disappearance in 1937. Contemporary press coverage frequently emphasized Morrow-Tait's marriage and motherhood alongside her flying accomplishments documenting the public expectations confronting women pursuing aviation records in the postwar period. Pencil annotations and press stamp on verso. In very good condition. An original dated press photograph recording the completion of the first aerial circumnavigation piloted by a woman. unknown
1920rif. 127751920. Early aviation technical manuscript explaining aircraft engine operation ignition systems and electrical wiring during the formative decades of powered flight. Produced in the early 1920s when aviation technology was transitioning from experimental wartime aircraft to increasingly standardized civil and military aeronautical engineering the manuscript documents the mechanical knowledge required to operate and maintain contemporary aircraft engines and electrical systems. The notebook focuses particularly on ignition circuitry engine starting procedures and performance specifications subjects central to the reliability and safety of early aviation machinery. References to the Jaguar engine a widely used aircraft powerplant of the interwar period situate the manuscript within the technical environment of early twentieth century aviation engineering and aircraft maintenance training. Manuscript aviation engineering notebook. Fourteen handwritten pages with numerous technical drawings and labeled diagrams explaining aircraft systems. The manuscript includes sections describing "general data" relating to aircraft performance characteristics such as speed and weight along with detailed mechanical illustrations including a "main wiring diagram." Several pages explain engine starting procedures and ignition circuitry. One labeled sequence reads: "Jaguar starting. See that both the engine magnets are switched off and that the throttle is in the slow running position. 2. With gas starter. Connect the gas coupling of the starter to the lead to the distributor of one of the two engine magnets. See that H1 lead switch from gas starter mag to engine mag is switched off. 3. Start the gas starter." Another passage describing a technical diagram states: "The ignition system is a highly developed form of battery coil ignition designed as an integral part of the engine. The general layout comprises a direct current generated gear driven from the engine." The manuscript combines written explanation with hand drawn schematics intended to clarify the layout and function of aircraft electrical and ignition components. During the early 1920s aviation expanded rapidly following the technological acceleration of World War I when aircraft design engine power and onboard systems developed at unprecedented speed. Technical manuals and engineering notebooks such as this formed an essential part of the training culture surrounding aircraft mechanics pilots and aeronautical engineers who needed to understand increasingly complex electrical systems ignition mechanisms and engine starting procedures. The attention given to wiring diagrams and ignition circuitry reflects the growing sophistication of aircraft power plants and onboard electrical networks during the interwar period. Surviving manuscript documentation of this kind provides insight into how aviation technology was taught recorded and transmitted during a period when aeronautical engineering was still developing standardized instructional literature. Light handling wear with minor age toning; overall excellent condition. A detailed early technical manuscript documenting the mechanical knowledge underlying inter war aviation technology. unknown

rif. 118812Very Good. A gelatin silver print 216 × 166 mm lightly creased at the corner-tips; in excellent condition. The aircraft appear to be a Sopwith Camel and two Avro 504s specific models not determined. Offered with two other photographs of a biplane possibly a Sopwith Camel in the air: one is silhouetted above billowing sunlit clouds 147 × 199 mm printed without margins; the other is shown flying between clouds above hedgerows and fields 216 × 166 mm. We purchased these photographs with a small group of aerial photographs of Leighterton Aerodrome. 'By 1917 the Australian Flying Corps AFC consisted of four operational squadrons which outstripped the ability of the Army's Central Flying School at Point Cook to supply sufficient trained airmen. It was decided therefore to establish training squadrons within the AFC. Four such squadrons were subsequently established in the United Kingdom during 1917. 8 Squadron AFC was formed at Wendover on 24 October 1917. It was originally identified as 33 Australian Training Squadron Royal Flying Corps but was renamed along with all of the Australian squadrons in January 1918. The squadron relocated to Cirencester on 9 January 1918 and thence to Leighterton where it remained until disbanded in April 1919. The squadron's principal role was to prepare personnel for service with what was at first 71 Australian Squadron RFC and subsequently 4 Squadron AFC which was operating with British forces over the Western Front' Australian War Memorial website. 3 items. unknown
rif. 118695Fifteen gelatin silver prints one 127 × 129 mm all others 134 × 139 mm slightly curled around the vertical axis; in uniformly fine condition Numbers pencilled on the verso of all but the small print include '/43' so we will suggest 1943 as the date. The only caption is a later one in ballpoint pen identifying Darling Harbour; there are another two featuring the same general area. Eight feature Garden Island prominently in all but one instance and four focus on Cockatoo Island; the former was a major naval base and the latter the main ship repair facility during the Second World War. Although the photographs are not credited given the nature of the images and the fact they were taken during wartime they were presumably taken with authorisation. Offered with the photographs is 'Sydney an Aerial Close-up' by Walter Brooks with photography by Neil Sutherland 1986; those familiar with Sydney in the mid-2020s may derive some pleasure in drawing two comparisons . 16 items. unknown
rif. 118696Very Good. All are gelatin silver prints on thick stock; eight are oblique photographs 207 × 154 mm; two are vertical views approximately 165 × 220 mm; the larger ones are slightly creased at the corners one of them a little more so; the others are in excellent condition. All images are captioned in the negative. All eight oblique views carry the same date 25 June 1918 preceded by 'A3 AEO 62°' ranges from 110 to 121. Place names on them are Hamel Hamel Wood Somme Accroche Wood Tailloux Wood and Vaire Wood. The vertical images are dated 3 May and 27 June 1918 and carry a larger set of alpha-numeric references commencing 'A3 AE A 715' and '35 AE B 929' respectively. All ten prints have the signature 'Capt Sexton' in indelible pencil on the verso. Digitised service records indicate the signature is that of Eric James Sexton of the Adelaide suburb of Hindmarsh; he enlisted on 14 August 1914 shortly before his 21st birthday and was appointed to the 10th Battalion with the rank of lieutenant. He was wounded at the landing at Gallipoli promoted to captain the following day and later invalided back to Australia disembarking on 6 August 1915. By January 1916 he was declared fit again for active service and re-embarked in April for England where he performed various training roles. On 14 February 1917 he transferred to the Australian Machine Gun Training Depot with the rank of major. He embarked for Australia on 12 March 1918 arriving in Melbourne on 22 May 1918. Accordingly Sexton did not serve in France and was a major not a captain by the time these photographs were produced. We cannot explain the anomalies but will let the photographs speak for themselves. Significantly they show the area where the important Battle of Hamel was fought on 4 July 1918. 'Hamel was a big battle in miniature involving the experimentation of tanks and small ammunition drops as part of a broader all-arms offensive. While a coordinated offensive was not a new approach to warfare Hamel represented the culmination of three years of learning and innovation on the Western Front testing an all-inclusive approach to mobile warfare. The flawless execution of the operation resulted in Hamel becoming a model for future operations on the Western Front. In his account of the event Monash famously wrote that "the perfected modern battle plan is like nothing so much as a score for an orchestral composition where the various arms and units are the instruments and the tasks they perform are their respective musical phrases' Ellen Cresswell: 'The Experiment - Innovations at the Battle of Hamel' Australian War Memorial website. 10 items. unknown

rif. 115168The vintage gelatin silver photographs are in excellent condition; two are 130 × 180 mm taken on 22 July; one is 180 × 240 mm taken on 14 August. The large one is a slightly raking view of the village taken from a height of 400 metres; the substantial shell damage to virtually every building is clearly evident. The two smaller photographs are taken from a higher altitude and the extensive networks of trenches and numerous shell craters are the stand-out features. From late June 1916 to early October 1916 Champneuville and other villages in the surrounding area were the scene of attacks and counter-attacks between the German and French forces. In late August 1916 the French recaptured Champneuville during the Second Offensive Battle of Verdun. We have several other aerial views of the Western Front for sale; enquiries welcome. 3 items. unknown
1942rif. 313964New York 1942. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. Old folds lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature otherwise a fine letter with a bold clear signature. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort." Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. He died in New York in 1992. unknown
