réf. 90499Liverpool Jabez Vale n.d. circa 1840. . Broadside 31 x 29.5 cm. approx printed in blue ink with a large pictorial vignette surrounded by an ornamental border. Rare Liverpool printed broadside. The text consists of a quote from Lord Byron followed by a nineteen-line text praising the city and giving details of its topography and features of interest. Nanking porcelain was a major export item and the city would have been of great interest to people in the West. The blue on white of the broadside presumably reflects the distinctive blue-and-white porcelain itself. Liverpool, Jabez Vale, n.d. circa 1840. unknown
1926réf. 145415Shanghai: California Directory Association and the Shanghai Times 1926. A well-preserved example of this scarce guide for American visitors to China recorded in just four institutions on WorldCat. Produced during a golden age of East Asian travel this convenient compendium lists places of interest and suggested itineraries for major cities alongside dozens of advertisements for hotels curio shops and luxury goods. Foreign tourists in East Asia were not a new sight in the early 20th century but the construction of railway lines from the late 19th century caused a dramatic increase in the ease and possibilities of travel. In Hong Kong Shanghai and other large cities the number of businesses catering to the foreign tourist market ballooned with many listed in this guide. Inside travellers could find information on the Hong Kong Hotel and the famous Grand Hotel des Wagon-Lits in Peking's Legation Quarter as well advertisements for firms as varied as the Hong Kong and Kowloon Taxicab Company the outfitters Aux Chic Parisien U. B. Pilsener Beer of Shanghai Strehlneek's Chinese Art Studio and Clerici Bedoni & Co. importers of fine Italian wines. Two pages of pidgin English phrases are provided to help travellers ask for the "Sing-song house" the theatre or "Smelleum water" Eau de Cologne. The California Directory Association produced a number of tourist guides for travellers to the Far East all of which are now rare. Duodecimo. With 2 folding maps of central Hong Kong and Shanghai halftone illustrations in text advertisements throughout. Original red card wrappers title and Chinese dragon to front cover in black. Wrappers lightly creased with small chip to lower tip of front cover internally clean and bright larger folding map with small closed tear partially tape repaired to verso. A very good copy of this vulnerable publication. unknown
1922réf. 174979Hong Kong Weihaiwei Canton and at sea: 1922-27. An album compiled by an officer likely involved with the maintenance and testing of battleships and submarines interspersing photographs taken while on duty with his tourist snapshots and shots of friends. Nine images show vessels from the China Station's fleet of L-Class submarines being put through their paces. The photographs are arranged roughly chronologically and although many are captioned and some show the officer he is unidentified. It commences in 1922 and seven photographs taken onboard the battlecruiser HMS Repulse in the Mediterranean show Repulse and HMS Hood the largest ship in the Royal Navy undergoing full power trials. Photographs taken in China a few years later continue the theme. During the 1920s L-Class submarines served on the station as the Fourth Submarine Flotilla and the album contains photographs of HMS L3 and L4 during trials at Hong Kong in 1926 as well as diving trials for HMS L5. Two photographs taken atop the main body of HMS L2 show it forging ahead at full power. He also records the process of changing the submarine's propellor. A range of images document life in Weihaiwei the base from which British naval power radiated in north China. He has the chance to visit HMS Titania a submarine depot ship and he relaxes at the United Services Club recording the appearance of the grounds and the view from the club out to sea. There is time to play some golf on nearby Liugong Island and visit the Temple of the Four Winds and the Beehive Tombs. He captures for posterity the naval boat race including the "veteran officers' skiff" pulled by Captain later Admiral Robert Henry Taunton Raikes 1885-1953 commander of the Fourth Submarine Flotilla. The sights and sounds of south China similarly beckon. In Canton he visits the waterfront and temples and photographs goods being taken to market and images show him holidaying with friends at Repulse Bay in Hong Kong. Interspersed are other glimpses onto life at sea: Hood's quarterdeck rigged for dancing; a group of pirates captured after they seized and torched the steamship SS Sunning near Hong Kong in late 1926; and cricket on the deck of a cruise ship. Landscape quarto album buff card covers tied with light brown cord through punch holes front cover with black embossed letters within blind-stamped panel 18 stiff card leaves full with 181 tipped-in gelatin silver photographs most c. 85 x 60 mm to 115 x 160 mm short pencil and ink captions. 1933réf. 144201Moscow: Parti noe izd-vo 1933. First edition first printing uncommon institutionally of this widely cited Russian research publication on the soviets controlled by the Chinese Communist Party in the early 1930s. It reflects the Kremlin's keen paternalistic interest in the development of China's communist movement and stamping Comintern authority on Mao and other party leaders. Worldcat records just ten copies. After the collapse of the Chinese Communist Party's CCP First United Front with the Kuomintang in 1927 the remnants of the CCP retreated to rural areas and formed a number of soviets as experiments in cultivating a socialist revolution in the countryside. These base areas including Jingangshan and Jiangxi-Fujian became the birthplaces of the rurally-focused ideology that would eventually deliver the whole of China for the CCP. Historical research continues to reveal the Soviet Union's extensive involvement in the CCP's early growth. In 1930 Stalin and other Comintern figures had been instrumental in convincing a wing of the CCP leadership to abandon hopes of forming urban soviets and instead focus on cultivating support among the peasantry. By 1933 having grown to distrust Mao's leadership Moscow again altered the shape of the party by sending Bo Gu one of the "28 Bolsheviks" and Otto Braun to take charge of the Jiangxi soviet and manage military operations against Kuomintang encirclement campaigns. Moscow needed access to the most up-to-date information on the base areas. The present work contains a 100-page introduction to the Chinese soviets co-authored by the Russian Sinologist Evgenii Sigismundovich Iolk 1900-1937 who was ideally qualified on account of having been in China in 1926-27 as a member of Borodin's staff specialising in agrarian issues. During this period Iolk had had a front row seat to Mao's early attempts to organise the peasantry. In 1932 he began working in the intelligence section of the General Staff of the Red Army in which role he undoubtedly enjoyed access to the latest information on developments in China. Octavo. With 5 folding maps 1 with colour. Original red cloth title to spine and front board reverse outlined in silver block silver hammer and sickle device to spine. With the errata slip tipped in. A few marks and faint stains to cloth extremities a little rubbed textblock and upper margin of maps lightly browned. A very good copy. hardcover

1913réf. 168261London: War Office 1913. Modernity's steel rails The 1913 version of a map that was issued periodically throughout the 1910s. Drawn and printed at the Ordnance Survey Office in Southampton it highlights railways built in progress and proposed and two inset maps show links to Beijing and in Manchuria. A column of notes gives gauges mileages and notes on construction. The map shows that at the onset of Republican rule China had around a dozen lines in progress or planned - including a stretch linking Hankou to Canton - to complement the main lines connecting Beijing to Hankou Shanghai and Mukden. The side notes address the complexity of the railway network's governance and administration - lines were variously built managed and worked by combinations of foreign and Chinese organizations. Colour lithographed map 740 x 990 mm. Sometime folded occasional scuffing and edge toning two panels on verso browned: a very good example. unknown

Large quarto in dark blue title-stamped cloth; 598 pages illustrations 27 cm; folding maps color plates b&w photos; adverts indexes. In Chinese. Rare. WorldCat locates but one copy. This 1960 San Francisco volume commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Young China 《少年中國》 a youth-centered nationalist periodical and organization founded in 1910 amid the reformist and revolutionary currents leading to the fall of the Qing. Rooted in late–Qing and early Republican political culture Young China promoted moral regeneration national revival and resistance to foreign domination framing “youth” as the ethical vanguard of China’s future. Its survival and rebirth in the overseas Chinese world reflect the continuity of this ideology beyond the mainland. In a Taiwanese and émigré context the book is significant as a diasporic archive of Chinese republican memory maintained abroad during periods of rupture on both the mainland and the island. Produced in a limited non-commercial print run and distributed within overseas Chinese networks thi slarge illustrated volume functions less as a celebratory souvenir than as an assertion of historical legitimacy and political lineage. An important document of how Taiwanese-linked émigré communities in 1960 understood themselves as custodians of a revolutionary tradition originating in 1910 and carried forward in exile. Octavo album ca. 215x145 cm. 47 leaves 23 blank. Period green cloth binding. 73 photographs from 55x85 to 165x115 cm. Approximately half of the photos are captioned in Russian. The album is signed ’Sophie Stcherbakof. 26/1/1896 on the half-title’ the next page includes a deduction leaf from Alexei Fedorovich Vedernikov to Maria Fyodorovich and Nikolay Smirnov who got married on 26th of January 1896 in Verny now - Alma-Ata Kazakhstan next to the dedication is a song Vedernikov sang at their wedding on which he was the best man. Also album includes three pasted postcards a collage with three cloth stripes red-blue and white and a praise for ‘matouchka Rossia’ in mix of French and latinized Russian dated 1893 and a red piece of paper with printed in Chinese ‘Badong’ for the name of Badong province and three geographical names from the province in Russian. Few photos are faded and with tears but overall in good condition. The albums are coming from the families of the Russian officers who served in China Central Asia and the Far East in the last two decades of the existence of the Russian Empire. The album share provenance and have belonged together in the collection we acquired them from although it is unclear if the people on the photos are related. The first album is likely complied by lieutenant S.E.Bocharov of the South Manchurian Detachment of the Russian Army. This detachment operated in the Far East until the formation of the Manchurian Army in 1904 at the outset of the Russo-Japanese War. Its roots trace back to late summer and early autumn of 1901 when Russian troops in Northern Manchuria organized and executed operations to capture the last remaining leaders of the hunhuz movement who were still at large. The detachment was commanded by Lieutenant General Tserpitsky. The outcome of the detachment's operations was the capture of the Chinese General Sheu and the surrender of another hunhuz chieftain Fulango. In August 1901 Lieutenant General Tserpitsky relinquished command of the South Manchurian Detachment to Major General Fleischer who had previously commanded it at the beginning of the campaign during the advance on Haicheng. The creation of this album likely dates to this specific period; the photographs depict the detachment's headquarters in Mukden officers and their families a steam locomotive on the railway the Liaohe River in Yingkou a panoramic view of Yingkou and a barracks building under construction. The album also contains two studio photographs of Nagasaki—including a hand-colored image of the customs house—as well as two Japanese studio genre scenes. Individuals mentioned in the album include: Convoy Commander Anisimov Senior Adjutant Vlasenko Officer for Special Duties Vutman Colonel Glinsky and his wife Shura Glinskaya and Lieutenant Vlasenko. The second album is a keepsake album kept by Sophia Sherbakova Ð¡Ð¾Ñ„Ð¸Ñ Щербакова. The album starts in Kazakhstan then we see the couple vacating in Crimea Zeleny Mys and visiting Niagara Falls and New York. The second half of the album is dedicated to their life in China and Siberia: it starts with the street panorama in Badong an image of two Russian officers next to a buddhist temple group of four Russians on the horse-changing station the image of the house with a caption ‘our flat’ a group of Cossacks next to an entrance into a town street and nature views. The final section of the album shows Sophia in Irkutsk in 1914-1916 with one photo captured ‘Kazan’. Overall an interesting collection of photos of pre-1917 Russian activities in the Far East which are rare on the market. hardcover

1900réf. 238871900. Peking and northern China photographic archive documenting everyday commerce informal labor transportation and waterfront life during the final Qing and early Republican periods circa 1900 to the 1920s. Rather than concentrating on monuments or official events the photographs turn repeatedly toward merchants barbers vendors boatmen fishermen cart drivers and working streets. French manuscript captions identify Peking Tien Tsin and other northern Chinese locations suggesting a Francophone traveler recording the commercial and social landscape encountered along the route. Early twentieth century photographs of China survive in substantial institutional collections but small groups centered on ordinary economic activity and working neighborhoods like this one are less frequently encountered than architectural military and tourist views. Photo archive of 23 sepia toned silver gelatin photographs ranging from approximately 2 x 3 to 3 x 4 inches Peking Tien Tsin and northern China circa 1900 to the 1920s. The photographs show merchants displaying wares in open air markets; a street barber attending a seated customer; vendors working from tables baskets and temporary stalls; men gathered around cooking vessels beneath makeshift shelters; horse and donkey carts carrying goods; fishermen and boatmen among crowded wooden craft; and waterfront workers loading or unloading vessels. River and harbor views record dense concentrations of sampans and other small boats beside wooden landings while street scenes show carts animals warehouses a water tower and commercial traffic moving through the same urban environment. French inscriptions on the versos identify subjects and places including "Pékin marché" "Pékin restaurant en plein air" "Tien Tsin" "Tien Tsin rue Dillon" "voiture chinoise" and "port de bateaux français." Other captions appear to identify Chin Van Tao possibly an early romanization of Qinhuangdao though that reading remains uncertain. Several photographs carry French captions written directly in the negative or along the lower edge providing contemporary identifications of the scenes and further associating the group with a Francophone traveler or photographer. The photographs span the final years of the Qing dynasty the 1911 Revolution the establishment of the Republic in 1912 and the subsequent Republican period when Peking remained a major political and commercial center. After the Qing abdication in February 1912 Peking became the seat of Yuan Shikai's government and remained the principal seat of the Beiyang government until 1928. The material culture recorded here changed more slowly than the political institutions around it: carts animal transport open air markets small trades river traffic and neighborhood commerce continued to structure daily life. The French captions also broaden the archive beyond Peking connecting the capital to Tien Tsin and northern Chinese waterways and ports. Light to moderate surface wear occasional spotting edge wear minor creasing and varying degrees of fading and toning; manuscript verso inscriptions remain generally legible. Overall in very good condition. A concentrated visual record of merchants boatmen barbers vendors transport workers markets and waterways sustaining everyday economic life in northern China across the late Qing and early Republican eras. unknown

About twenty pages detached occasional silvering but overall a very good album with strong interesting photos. Historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photos illustrating the life of an upper-class German family in Beijing during the 1920s-1930s. According to the photographs the family was likely connected to the German military stationed in Beijing from the 1920s until Japan’s invasion in 1937. During this period Germany maintained strong economic and military ties with China providing military advisors and technical assistance to the Nationalist government. The presence of a high-ranking German family suggests they may have been part of this mission involved in military training arms trade or diplomatic efforts. The album contains 239 rare original photos likely taken by a female German expatriate in Beijing. About 160 images follow the compiler’s son from infancy showing him strolling through Beijing streets with Chinese nannies riding in carts pulled by local coolies and posing in military uniforms and Chinese conical hats with other Western children. Especially interesting are about fifteen rare photos of a fascist youth camp showing children beside fascist flags and Chinese courtyard houses dressed in uniform and participating in group activities. There are also several excellent large-size photographs of a local German school capturing costumed Christmas Eve performances and classroom scenes. The rest of the photos likely show the compiler’s husband with other high-profile Europeans at an outdoor picnic fascist flags displayed on buildings and scenic views of Miaofeng Mountain Tan Zhe Si temple roofs and surrounding landscapes. Overall historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photos illustrating the life of an upper-class German family in Beijing during the 1920s-1930s. hardcover
