He was also a distributor of Chinese language Christian literature in Shanghai and region from 1847. At the General Conference of the Protestant Missionaries of China held at Shanghai May 10th to 24th 1877 he presented this work which was then published in a revised edition in 1878. There exist images of the Members of the Missionary Conference in two group photographs those engaged in Mission work for over ten years and those engaged in Mission work for under ten years which is reproduced in 'History of Photography in China Western Photographers 1861-1879' by Terry Bennett Quaritch 2010 on page 135 the Reverend Yates is not present but his wife is. . 1914réf. 169106London.: Methuen & Co Ltd. 1st UK Edition. 1914. 404pp 31 3 publisher's catalogues Strikingly decorated blue cloth covers lettered in gilt head of spine has a closed tear that has been reinforced small puncture hole to the gutter on the front board prior owner name in pencil on the front free endpaper but a very attractive copy of the first edition. The author states in the prologue that the people living in these pages are not real but they are essential parts of a picture painted to portray facts - that is the impact of the East upon the West the disarray which collisions bring and the ensuing irony. At first glance this novel may appear unremarkable however it is of considerable interest in the 20th century history of Chinese-European relations as it includes on page 26 what is believed to be the earliest published reference to the infamous sign in Shanghai's Public Garden which purportedly stated "Dogs and Chinese not Admitted". The sign has now been conclusively shown not to have stated this however references to the racist wording still appear to this day and the reporting of its existence has caused and continues to cause a great deal of ill feeling. Reginald Johnston former tutor to Pu Yi the last emperor of China wrote in a 1927 pamphlet issued by the Tianjin British Committee of Information that the anti-Chinese wording "it is a kind of slander which takes a lot of killing and survives even the most authoritative denials". Shanghai's Dogs and Chinese Not Admitted" Sign: Legend History and Contemporary Symbol - Robert A. Bickers and Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom. The China Quarterly No 142. June 1995. Putnam Weale was the name under which Bertram Lenox Simpson 1877- 1930 wrote many books about China. Born in England Bertram Simpson followed his father into the Chinese Maritime Customs Service leaving the service in 1901. He wrote a great deal about China in the years that followed and became deeply involved in Chinese politics. He was murdered in 1930 and it seems quite likely that his murder was of a political nature though neither motive nor killer was ever found. . Methuen & Co Ltd. hardcover

Hao-ch'iu chuan "The pleasing history" or "The fortunate union" is a Chinese "caizi jiaren" talent and beauty novel published in the 17th Century. The author is known only under the name "Man of the Teaching of Names" The identity of the author and exact date of publishing are not known. According to Philippe Postel author of "Les Traductions Françaises du Haoqiu Zhuan" the most commonly stated date of authorship is 1683 at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. The translator John Francis Davis was Governor of Hong Kong in the period 1844 - 48. At the beginning of his career he served on Lord Amherst's Mission to China and after spending the best part of his career in the service of the East India Company he succeeded Lord Pottinger as Governor of Hong Kong. A scholarly man he did not fit into this role his knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture and life being very unpopular with the European community. The frostiness was such that when he finally departed Hong Kong the European community showed their displeasure by not acknowledging his departure in any way. . Oriental Translation Fund. hardcover

This conference also known as The Washington Naval Conference; The Washington Arms Conference or the Washington Disarmament Conference was a meeting of delegates from nine nations - the USA Japan China France Britain Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Portugal. This group which very deliberately excluded Russia met in this interesting post WWI world to discuss and negotiate their interests in the Pacific and the East Asian region. Three major treaties were some of the results of the conference: Four-Power Treaty; Five-Power Treaty also known at the Washington Naval Treaty and the Nine-Power Treaty together with a number of other smaller agreements. These treaties helped keep the peace throughout the 1920s and also helped Japan build up her navy and work on consolidating her position in China. The decisions and actions that took place at this conference clearly had an effect on the lead up to World War II in East Asia and it can be argued still have echoes today on relationships with and within the region today. . 外交部.
