1920réf. 175010China: c. 1920s - 1980s. A golden age of advertising An expansive collection showcasing the evolution and adaptation of visual marketing in China between the 1920s and 1980s including the creation of the "modern girl" image the sinicization of western aesthetics and the survival of Republican-era imagery in communist contexts. Commercial messages are conveyed in a variety of formats including calendars wrappers and packets posters flyers and brochures while others are clipped from magazines. The products advertised include consumer goods such as cigarettes Hatamen Qianmen Golden Road medicines Hong Ren Dan and fireworks Yick Loong as well as agricultural products and fertilizers BM & Co. pencils alarm clocks and fountain pens. Many are rich in colour and call on cultural tropes and touchpoints including elements of traditional culture. The collection represents the high standard of printing executed in Shanghai and other commercial centres especially in the interwar period. Many examples in this collection are targeted towards female consumers. Chinese and foreign advertising agencies quickly recognized that urban women emerging as a wealthy and more independent social group in the early 20th century were both a key market for example for cigarettes and an important marketing tool. From the 1950s onwards these urbane female figures give way to imagery emphasizing socialist and working-class credentials. Provenance: the collection was acquired by a private collector in Shanghai in the mid-1990s and has been in the US for the past three decades. It is offered here for the first time. Approximately 450 items in varying sizes up to 330 x 230 mm with a few duplicates the majority colour lithographs on paper. Predominantly in Chinese with occasional English and Russian. Generally in bright condition the odd tape repair some items with notations and mimeograph printing on verso where later repurposed: a very good collection of fragile material. unknown

1867réf. 193376Mainly China and Japan: 16 October 1863 - 29 July 1867. Tensions and turbulence in the treaty ports A revealing source spanning Courtenay's entire East Asia command during which Scylla - a wooden screw corvette - patrolled the coast of China and Japan. Courtenay spent five months as the senior officer in charge of the Shanghai division bringing him into contact with the likes of Sir Harry Parkes and also co-ordinated anti-piracy operations. Courtenay 1820-1894 made captain in 1859 and was promoted to vice-admiral in 1881. These letters report on Scylla's movements and occurrences onshore. Many recently opened cities were still tense and Western officers and civilians faced jeering stone-throwing and other acts of xenophobia. A lengthy letter from 2 September 1864 sent to Vice-Admiral Sir Augustus Kuper the commander-in-chief describes anti-foreign sentiment in Nagasaki in the wake of the Namamugi Incident and the Battle of Shimonoseki Straits. He records measures taken to counteract the influence of soldiers deployed in disguise by the hostile Choshu domain and relays rumours of a Choshu attack on the European enclave. "Considering that there are fifty people here either Dutch or under Dutch protection I am surprised that there should be no vessel of war of that nation here." In Amoy the ship's arrival "caused great excitement: numerous reports were spread of the reason of her coming among others are to the effect that we had landed several hundred men and that I was going to the city to seize the tautai" 26 December 1865. Care was also required in dealing with the Russians Courtenay reminding his officers to be "extremely guarded in asking questions or making observations" 25 July 1866. Other correspondence concerns piracy. Courtenay found the Chinese maritime police "utterly inefficient" 30 November 1865 and used his authority to send the gunboat HMS Grasshopper to seize lorchas on the coast. Quarto 320 x 205 mm. With 70 leaves filled with neat manuscript in several hands 2 bound- or tipped-in manuscript slips; additional blank. Recent quarter calf spine lettered in gilt green cloth sides front cover lettered in gilt green endpapers. A little marking internally: a well-preserved example. hardcover

Octavo album ca. 215x145 cm. 47 leaves 23 blank. Period green cloth binding. 73 photographs from 55x85 to 165x115 cm. Approximately half of the photos are captioned in Russian. The album is signed ’Sophie Stcherbakof. 26/1/1896 on the half-title’ the next page includes a deduction leaf from Alexei Fedorovich Vedernikov to Maria Fyodorovich and Nikolay Smirnov who got married on 26th of January 1896 in Verny now - Alma-Ata Kazakhstan next to the dedication is a song Vedernikov sang at their wedding on which he was the best man. Also album includes three pasted postcards a collage with three cloth stripes red-blue and white and a praise for ‘matouchka Rossia’ in mix of French and latinized Russian dated 1893 and a red piece of paper with printed in Chinese ‘Badong’ for the name of Badong province and three geographical names from the province in Russian. Few photos are faded and with tears but overall in good condition. The albums are coming from the families of the Russian officers who served in China Central Asia and the Far East in the last two decades of the existence of the Russian Empire. The album share provenance and have belonged together in the collection we acquired them from although it is unclear if the people on the photos are related. The first album is likely complied by lieutenant S.E.Bocharov of the South Manchurian Detachment of the Russian Army. This detachment operated in the Far East until the formation of the Manchurian Army in 1904 at the outset of the Russo-Japanese War. Its roots trace back to late summer and early autumn of 1901 when Russian troops in Northern Manchuria organized and executed operations to capture the last remaining leaders of the hunhuz movement who were still at large. The detachment was commanded by Lieutenant General Tserpitsky. The outcome of the detachment's operations was the capture of the Chinese General Sheu and the surrender of another hunhuz chieftain Fulango. In August 1901 Lieutenant General Tserpitsky relinquished command of the South Manchurian Detachment to Major General Fleischer who had previously commanded it at the beginning of the campaign during the advance on Haicheng. The creation of this album likely dates to this specific period; the photographs depict the detachment's headquarters in Mukden officers and their families a steam locomotive on the railway the Liaohe River in Yingkou a panoramic view of Yingkou and a barracks building under construction. The album also contains two studio photographs of Nagasaki—including a hand-colored image of the customs house—as well as two Japanese studio genre scenes. Individuals mentioned in the album include: Convoy Commander Anisimov Senior Adjutant Vlasenko Officer for Special Duties Vutman Colonel Glinsky and his wife Shura Glinskaya and Lieutenant Vlasenko. The second album is a keepsake album kept by Sophia Sherbakova Ð¡Ð¾Ñ„Ð¸Ñ Щербакова. The album starts in Kazakhstan then we see the couple vacating in Crimea Zeleny Mys and visiting Niagara Falls and New York. The second half of the album is dedicated to their life in China and Siberia: it starts with the street panorama in Badong an image of two Russian officers next to a buddhist temple group of four Russians on the horse-changing station the image of the house with a caption ‘our flat’ a group of Cossacks next to an entrance into a town street and nature views. The final section of the album shows Sophia in Irkutsk in 1914-1916 with one photo captured ‘Kazan’. Overall an interesting collection of photos of pre-1917 Russian activities in the Far East which are rare on the market. hardcover
réf. FRE47The collection comprises 207 glass negatives 161 sheet-film negatives preserved in 32 contemporary negative boxes 33 original silver gelatin photographs and 23 sequential newsreel frames together documenting urban life foreign concessions political unrest transportation military activity rural society and the aftermath of the devastating Shanghai typhoon of 1926. The negatives are housed in contemporary photographic boxes manufactured in London and in Rome. One of the boxes bears a contemporary Chinese inscription reading 风景照片 "Landscape Photographs " while another carries a handwritten notation mentioning the Chino-Italian Bank Huayi Yinhang together with the partially legible European name "G. Perez " strongly suggesting that the archive belonged to or was compiled by an Italian associated with the bank during his residence in China. The collection appears to have been assembled between approximately 1923 and 1926 the period during which the compiler was active in China. Most of the negatives were almost certainly exposed by the compiler himself while a smaller group—particularly several dozen slightly softer copy negatives depicting well-known late Qing punishment scenes—were likely reproduced from earlier photographs or commercially available prints and incorporated into the archive. Such compilation was common among professional photographers journalists and foreign residents in China during the Republican period. The archive documents both the international settlements and the Chinese cities surrounding them. Shanghai is represented by numerous views of the Bund and waterfront the construction of the North China Daily News Building Kiangse Road and other streets together with more than thirty photographs recording the widespread destruction caused by the Shanghai Typhoon of 1926 including collapsed buildings wrecked vessels damaged railway equipment debris-strewn streets and emergency conditions in the city. These negatives clearly dated 6th of July 1926Tianjin is documented through views of the Italian Concession Municipal Council Building the British General Consulate Piazza Regina Elena panoramic views of the city and a remarkable series depicting groups of Italian residents posing with local Chinese inhabitants and railway workers. Additional photographs depict the Nanjing City Wall river traffic traditional passenger boats rural villages with vernacular courtyard farmhouses agricultural labour grain harvesting shrine interiors and everyday life in the Chinese countryside. Around two dozen photos depict sights in Beijing and the Great Wall another 10 photos show Beijing Ancient Observatory and its instruments on the rooftop terrace. Of particular historical significance are photographs recording the political tensions of Republican China. These include contemporary images of Chinese demonstrations walls covered with political slogans and hand-painted inscriptions and Chinese troops marching through the streets apparently in preparation for or during the suppression of protests. The archive also contains photographs of North Chinese irregulars or bandits armed with rifles military units railway stations—including a sequence from Lingcheng Station possibly connected with the widely reported Lincheng railway incident—and numerous scenes illustrating the growing military presence in North China during the turbulent years preceding the Northern Expedition. A separate group comprises approximately three dozen copy negatives reproducing well-known photographs of late Qing judicial punishments dating originally from the 1890s through the final years of the Qing dynasty. Among them are views associated with the Jiangnan Examination Hall and other widely circulated images illustrating penal practices that had attracted considerable attention in contemporary European publications. Their slightly softer appearance compared with the rest of the archive suggests that they were copied from earlier photographic prints or negatives rather than exposed directly by the compiler reflecting the common practice of incorporating historically significant documentary images into personal photographic collections. The presence of the Chino-Italian Bank annotation together with the concentration of photographs relating to the Italian community in Tianjin and Shanghai strongly suggests that the compiler was closely connected with the Italian commercial presence in Republican China. Rather than functioning solely as a photographer he appears to have assembled a comprehensive visual record of contemporary China combining his own documentary photographs with acquired negatives illustrating subjects of historical or journalistic interest. The result is an unusually coherent archive documenting China during the politically volatile years immediately preceding the Northern Expedition viewed through the perspective of a member of the small Italian expatriate community active in the country's treaty ports. unknown

First edition containing several detailed reports of British expeditions undertaken in the early 1860s in search of a route into China via the Irrawaddy or Salween rivers.
