First edition account of a pivotal British diplomatic expedition. Laurence Oliphant 1829-1888 was private secretary to Lord Elgin at this time and his very readable narrative provides a first-hand record of the 19th-century diplomatic and military efforts that forced open trade in East Asia including for example an account of the bombardment of Canton during the Second Opium War. During this journey they secured the Treaty of Tientsin in China and the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce. The text is highly significant for documenting this critical era of Western imperialism. . William Blackwood and Sons. hardcover

1956Best.-Nr. 1700121956. CHINA. First five-year plan for Development of the National Economy of the People's Republic of China in 1953-1957. Unpaginated approximately 70 pp. profusely illustrated. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. Peking: Foreign Languages Press 1956. An astonishing example of modernist book design from communist China. The avant-garde layout combined with the use of photography and isotypes is strongly reminiscent of such works as Lissitzky's An Album Illustrating the State Organization and National Economy of the U.S.S.R. published in 1929. Dust jacket restored. Otherwise a fine copy of a most unusual book. hardcover

Barros himself never traveled to Asia; however he had access to Chinese texts and a literate Chinese slave in his Lisbon office who could read and interpret them. Additionally Escalante conducted interviews with Portuguese merchants who had journeyed to the Chinese coast as well as some individuals from China who had arrived in Spain. Approximately 48 pages. Best.-Nr. 103603Zürich Paranoia City 1990. 4° 65 S. zahlr. Abb. Brosch. Tadellos.
