8vo, br. ed. Concepts of historical progress or decline and the idea of a cycle of historical movement have existed in many civilizations. In spite of claims that they be transnational or even universal, periodization schemes invariably reveal specific social and cultural predispositions. Our dialogue, which brings together a Sinologist and a scholar of early modern History in Europe, considers periodization as a historical phenomenon, studying the case of the “Renaissance.” Understood in the tradition of J. Burckhardt, who referred back to ideas voiced by the humanists of the 14th and 15th centuries, and focusing on the particularities of humanist dialogue which informed the making of the “Renaissance” in Italy, our discussion highlights elements that distinguish it from other movements that have proclaimed themselves as “r/Renaissances,” studying, in particular, the Chinese Renaissance in the early 20th century. While disagreeing on several fundamental issues, we suggest that interdisciplinary and interregional dialogue is a format useful to addressing some of the more far-reaching questions in global history, e.g. whether and when a periodization scheme such as “Renaissance” can fruitfully be applied to describe non-European experiences.
1983réf. 009857Cambridge etc., Cambridge University Press, 1983. ix, 329 S. Orig.-Pappband mit Schutzumschlag. "Tun-huang Popular Narratives presents authoritative translations of four vernacular Chinese stories, taken from fragmentary texts usually referred to as pien-wen or 'transformation texts'. Dating from the late T'ang (618-907) and Five Dynasties (907-959) periods, the texts were discovered early last century in a cave at Tun-huang, in Chinese Central Asia. However, written down in an early colloquial language by semi-literate individuals and posing formidable philological problems, the texts have not been studied critically before. Nevertheless they represent the only surviving primary evidence of a widespread and flourishing world of popular entertainment during these centuries. The tales deal with both religious (mostly Buddhist) and secular themes, and make exciting and vivid reading" (Publisher's description). Mit kleinem chinesischem Stempel, sonst schönes, gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.
1943First Shanghai edition. Original boards. 8vo. Vol. Nashim-Kedushah is 256, 72, and 222 pages. Vol. Haflaah-Zeraim is 274 and 198 pages. Vol. Nezikin-Shoftim is 140, 128, 268, and 216 pages. Published by the exiled Mir Yeshivah, one of the only yeshivas to survive as a whole body. In terms of the learning, yeshiva students say this was the most productive period ever, as they had nothing else to do other than sink into the study of the Rambam and the Talmud. This book of the Rambam was edited by the heads of the yeshiva during its years in the exile in Shanghai. SUBJECTS: Rambam Holocaust Displaced Persons. OCLC lists one copy at JTS. Very light wear to boards. Pages are browning. Text is very clean overall, but very lightly faded in some areas. Overall Very Good Condition. (RAB-60-22)
