Described as both violent and beautiful Daisuke Ichiba's visual art style borrows from manga and anime Japanese body horror Asian folklore and the supernatural and a hefty dose of queasy eroticism often placed in direct opposition to the grotesque nature of the composition. "Mariage" is one of his limited edition book form pieces for the outsider art studio "Le Derneir Cri" in Marseilles. "Pakito" resident artist at Dernier Cri and the celebrated manga artist Takashi Nemoto have both served as patrons of Ichiba's art over the years and Takashi Nemoto in particular has been a staunch supporter of Daisuke's often controversial and divisive work. "Humans simultaneously combine tenderness and violence. If you peel back the face of a beautiful woman you see it is clogged with viscera. Choosing to create work that is only beautiful feels artificial. Thus I paint both. You cannot sever the two. The expression that results is a natural chaos. In my work I project chaos anarchy anxiety the grotesque the absurd and the irrational. By doing so I attain harmony. This is my art. Put simply I paint humanity the spirit." - Daisuke Ichiba. 1946ref. 82962Yokohama: US Troop Information and Education Section; Eighth Army Printing Plant Boonjudo 1946. First Edition. Small Octavo. 18cm. Publisher's purple card wraps in a Japanese coptic style binding with an illustrated paper title label applied to the front wrap. Some mior sunning and discoloration to the wraps some light cosmetic fraying to the stiching and some dog-eared corners in places. Internally clean illustrated througout. A very good neat little book. Clearly intended for the families of US servicemen and women stationed in Japan. Details of note include a run down on the seasonal weather in the US zones of residence on Honshu it was Tokyo-Yokohama and the Sendai area; on Hokkaido Sapporo; and on Kyusha Fukuoka among other areas how to secure housing and how that housing will differ from what Americans are accustomed to schooling banking etc. Clearly stemming from the US's post war prosperity and lone superpower status some of the entries would not have been out of place in a British 19th century military guide: "Servants are of medium quality.the average family will require about three; a cook a washerwoman and a Houseboy or girl. They are capable of picking up enough English.but to find a well-trained house servant is very rare." The slim volume is illustrated throughout with photographs and some characteristically military cartoons. From differing perspectives the guide can be seen both as rather brash and colonial and as attempting from a position of ignorance to anticipate potential culture shock and hazards on all sides of the divide; victor and vanquished foreigner and citizen soldier and civilian. Less than a handful of copies represented in institutions. US Troop Information and Education Section; Eighth Army Printing Plant, Boonjudo unknown books

First volume with an indecipherable ownership mark on veso of title page. The plates are all present in fresh condition and retaining substantial margins. An account of Jesuit missions in Japan by the prolific ascetical writer and Catholic educator. Pagès 1859 asserts that this work is ".l'ouvrage du P. Solier mis en meilheur ordre et continué depuis 1624 jusqu'en 1658"; and indeed Catholic Encyclopedia calls the work ".scarcely original for it was drawn in great part from the work which Father Solier had issued in 1627; he merely retouched the style and continued the narrative and.the objection is made that the work lacks precision is heavy and is crowded with details." Still Crasset's remained a standard and popular work being translated into several languages before it was superseded by Charlevoix's magisterial Histoire du Japon in 1736. Some of the work's popularity may no doubt be attributed to the rather lurid illustrations depicting the suffering of Christian martyrs under the depredations of the Shogunate; the folding plate in v.II for instance depicts the torture and execution of Christians at Mount Unzen on the island of Kyushu where dozens of faithful both European and Japanese were cooked to death in the scalding waters of the village's thermal baths after refusing to renounce their faith. Crasset's account was first published in 1689 under the anagrammatic pseudonym "l'Abbe de Tersac." The work appeared in English Spanish German and Portuguese translations between 1707 and 1750.
