A very good strong copy. Described as both violent and beautiful Daisuke Ichiba's visual art style borrows from manga and anime Japanese body horror Asian folklore and the supernatural and a hefty dose of queasy eroticism often placed in direct opposition to the grotesque nature of the composition. "Mariage" is one of his limited edition book form pieces for the outsider art studio "Le Derneir Cri" in Marseilles. "Pakito" resident artist at Dernier Cri and the celebrated manga artist Takashi Nemoto have both served as patrons of Ichiba's art over the years and Takashi Nemoto in particular has been a staunch supporter of Daisuke's often controversial and divisive work. "Humans simultaneously combine tenderness and violence. If you peel back the face of a beautiful woman you see it is clogged with viscera. Choosing to create work that is only beautiful feels artificial. Thus I paint both. You cannot sever the two. The expression that results is a natural chaos. In my work I project chaos anarchy anxiety the grotesque the absurd and the irrational. By doing so I attain harmony. This is my art. Put simply I paint humanity the spirit." - Daisuke Ichiba. 1946Best.-Nr. 82962Yokohama: US Troop Information and Education Section; Eighth Army Printing Plant Boonjudo 1946. First Edition. Small Octavo. 18cm. Publisher's purple card wraps in a Japanese coptic style binding with an illustrated paper title label applied to the front wrap. Some mior sunning and discoloration to the wraps some light cosmetic fraying to the stiching and some dog-eared corners in places. Internally clean illustrated througout. A very good neat little book. Clearly intended for the families of US servicemen and women stationed in Japan. Details of note include a run down on the seasonal weather in the US zones of residence on Honshu it was Tokyo-Yokohama and the Sendai area; on Hokkaido Sapporo; and on Kyusha Fukuoka among other areas how to secure housing and how that housing will differ from what Americans are accustomed to schooling banking etc. Clearly stemming from the US's post war prosperity and lone superpower status some of the entries would not have been out of place in a British 19th century military guide: "Servants are of medium quality.the average family will require about three; a cook a washerwoman and a Houseboy or girl. They are capable of picking up enough English.but to find a well-trained house servant is very rare." The slim volume is illustrated throughout with photographs and some characteristically military cartoons. From differing perspectives the guide can be seen both as rather brash and colonial and as attempting from a position of ignorance to anticipate potential culture shock and hazards on all sides of the divide; victor and vanquished foreigner and citizen soldier and civilian. Less than a handful of copies represented in institutions. US Troop Information and Education Section; Eighth Army Printing Plant, Boonjudo unknown books

First volume with an indecipherable ownership mark on veso of title page. The plates are all present in fresh condition and retaining substantial margins. An account of Jesuit missions in Japan by the prolific ascetical writer and Catholic educator. Pagès 1859 asserts that this work is ".l'ouvrage du P. Solier mis en meilheur ordre et continué depuis 1624 jusqu'en 1658"; and indeed Catholic Encyclopedia calls the work ".scarcely original for it was drawn in great part from the work which Father Solier had issued in 1627; he merely retouched the style and continued the narrative and.the objection is made that the work lacks precision is heavy and is crowded with details." Still Crasset's remained a standard and popular work being translated into several languages before it was superseded by Charlevoix's magisterial Histoire du Japon in 1736. Some of the work's popularity may no doubt be attributed to the rather lurid illustrations depicting the suffering of Christian martyrs under the depredations of the Shogunate; the folding plate in v.II for instance depicts the torture and execution of Christians at Mount Unzen on the island of Kyushu where dozens of faithful both European and Japanese were cooked to death in the scalding waters of the village's thermal baths after refusing to renounce their faith. Crasset's account was first published in 1689 under the anagrammatic pseudonym "l'Abbe de Tersac." The work appeared in English Spanish German and Portuguese translations between 1707 and 1750. Best.-Nr. vot9875Kodansha International Ltd. 1979 Quarto thick khaki cloth hardcover red label black lettering 308 pp. Very Good with small former-owner stamp; in a Very Good dust jacket with sunned spine. From dust jacket: If you want to be really outstanding at karate you are just the person for whom this book is intended. If you are determined to master the blindingly fast powerful and potentially devastating punches and kicks that make karate the most respected form of self defense and a tremendously exciting sport as well you can do it through the hundreds of excellent photographs and descriptions provided here. Those who have tried one of the older books on karate ususally have found to their disappointment that it simply did not give them the complete detailed instructions and illustrations -- the fundamentals plus the fine points -- that they were hoping for. This book fills the gaps left by others. It is written in a precise get-to-the-point style by Masatoship Nakaymama Chief Instructor of the 10000-member Japan Karate Association. Here he shares his great experience as a karate competitor and teacher describing and illustrating in detail all the correct movements involved in the particular block punch or kick you want to perfect as well as instructions on combining clocking techniques normal camera work often fails to record the action accurately. For this reason many of the photo sequences found in Dynamic Karate were taken using a stroboscope with a flash time of 1/10000 of a second enabling you to follow each movement as it is actually performed. The Japanese-language edition of this book is already a huge success in Japan where modern karate was developed. Already it has proved its value as the most authoritative complete book ever prepared for students and instructors alike. hardcover books
Best.-Nr. 44211Japan and Western Medicine. Oranda jin Geka ryoji no zu Dutch Surgery in Nagasaki. Original pen ink and watercolor drawing on light brown-toned silk with 4 vertical lines of Japanese characters in the upper left corner. Japan: late 18th or early 19th century. 483 x 363 mm. mounted as a scroll at a modern date on light grey silk backed with paper with a half-round hanging rail with braided ribbon attached at the top and a suspension bar at the foot measuring 914 x 443 mm. overall; preserved in a custom-made wooden box. A few tiny pinholes in upper corners of image but fine with the coloring fresh and bright. This striking image showing an amputation carried out by a Dutch surgeon in Japan was most likely painted in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century during Japan's self-imposed period of national isolation. The hand-painted image is related but by no means identical to a Nagasaki woodblock print titled "Surgery by a Dutch Physician" one of many popular souvenir prints depicting scenes unique to Nagasaki which at the time was the sole point of contact between Japan and the outside world. See our reproduction of the print. It may be that our scroll is the original of the image; however it is also possible that both hand-painted and woodcut versions of the image were produced simultaneously. Western surgery came to Japan in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries via the Portuguese who in 1543 became the first Europeans to make direct contact with Japan and the Dutch who became the only European nation allowed to trade with Japan after Japan's expulsion of the Portuguese in 1639. Surgeons attached to the Dutch East India Company established practices at the island of Dejima in Nagasaki Bay which led to the formation of several Japanese schools of surgery based on European methods. "This aspect of Western medicine known as K m -ry geka or 'Surgery of the Red-Haired' has had a profound effect on the development of surgical practice in Japan" Van Gulik p. 37. Van Gulik "Dutch surgery in Japan" in Red-Hair Medicine: Dutch-Japanese Medical Relations ed. Beukers et al. pp. 37-50. . unknown books

Places shown include Tokyo Kyoto Yokohama Nagoya Enoshima the shrines of Nikko and two views of Mt. Fuji. We have offered a handful of examples over the years and this is easily the finest in content with more occupational and daily life scenes as opposed to the standard landmarks as well as special touches such as the small hand-painted characters in the margins of each page and also in the finest condition.
