Questo libro nasce dalla necessità di avvicinare il lettore a un paese che da un lato è sempre più in prima linea nello sviluppo industriale e tecnologico globale, dall'altro è ancora vittima instabile dei perversi giochi politici che portarono alla sua divisione alla fine degli anni quaranta del XX secolo. Partendo dalle stesse mitiche origini della nazione coreana, dal territorio e dalla lingua fino alla difficile situazione geopolitica attuale, l'autore dipinge la grande avventura di un popolo di antica civiltà che, occupando da sempre un posto fondamentale nello scacchiere geopolitico dell'Estremo oriente, ha contribuito considerevolmente a formare quella cultura giapponese oggi nel mondo ben più conosciuta e apprezzata. Per secoli vaso di coccio fra vasi di ferro, la Corea sta ancora pagando per un'intrinseca debolezza e soprattutto per la protervia altrui, che proprio nel XX secolo l'ha portata prima a perdere un'indipendenza fino ad allora sempre difesa con successo e poi all'incommensurabile tragedia della divisione e della guerra fratricida.
