Some photographs contained in an envelope in rear of album. 10-3/4" x 16" Unless they were on the front lines equipped with C-Rations members of the U. S. Army stationed in Japan in the 1950s enjoyed hearty well-prepared meals - particularly the officers. This photograph album titled by its compiler "Far East Command 1951 - 1952 - 1953" contains snapshots and formal staff pictures of what appears to be the officers' mess of Pershing Heights - HQ for the Far East Command in Tokyo. The photographs show large kitchens Japanese cooks and waitresses in starched uniforms dining rooms and elaborate desserts on serving tables. During his time in Japan this officer also seems to have enjoyed some leisure time - trips to the beach with bikini-clad women temples sacred springs and other tourist attractions. He also photographed the interior of his own quarters some locals and many of the official buildings and their grounds. During the "Third Korean Winter" however he was sent North with the army as General Ridgway began "meatgrinder" tactics to regain the Korean peninsula. This second part of the album with pasted-in typewritten title "Pictures Taken in Korea 1952 - 1953" shows a rougher outfit with jeeps and artillery in the snow sandbagged quarters bundled-up Korean soldiers and what appears to be a portable mess. Despite the circumstances the cooks must have had efficient facilities in which to work; there is one small photograph of an elaborately iced and decorated cake proudly held by two chefs in white toques. At this time the major generals ordered food for their officers from Japan. The basic fare was apparently popular and was even said to be enjoyed by visiting entertainers like Jack Benny and Debbie Reynolds. There are several pictures of USO performances in this part of the album. unknown books

1964réf. 197821964. Anonymous photographs of African American soldiers stationed in Korea and Europe produced c. 1960s document Black military service during the Cold War and provide primary-source evidence for the study of U.S. Army deployments racial integration in the post-World War II military and lived experience within forward operating environments near geopolitical flashpoints. The images place African American servicemen at installations including Camp Kaiser in South Korea located within proximity to the Korean Demilitarized Zone and in European urban and alpine settings indicating rotational or multi-theater deployment. The archive supports research into the role of Black soldiers in Cold War containment strategy as well as the everyday conditions mobility and social environments encountered by enlisted personnel across Asia and Europe during a period of sustained global military presence. Archive of 24 original black and white silver gelatin photographs c. 1960s primarily measuring approximately 4" x 3". At least half of the images are identified as taken in Korea with multiple captions including "Camp Kaiser" "Korean Home" "Village" and "CO Area" situating the group within a U.S. Army installation environment composed of cinder block structures and Quonset huts approximately 60 miles north of Seoul and within range of North Korean artillery positions. One overhead view shows the full layout of Camp Kaiser while other images depict African American soldiers in field conditions described as "Cold Wet" trekking and camping in rugged terrain. Additional Korean scenes include a soldier leaning against a tank marked "Kimchee" and an airfield photograph showing a chrome fighter jet surrounded by personnel alongside additional aircraft including a biplane. European photographs include a parade observed from an apartment window in a German-speaking alpine town featuring a float labeled "General Knuller" as well as street-level images of crowds deployed fire engines and soldiers observing from a Volkswagen Beetle. One image shows an African American soldier standing outside a synagogue marked by a Star of David with a flag bearing the inscription "Troop Att 1964" indicating interaction with local religious or commemorative sites. The photographs align with the global positioning of U.S. forces during the Cold War particularly in South Korea following the Korean War armistice and across Western Europe as part of NATO-aligned defense strategy. African American soldiers serving in an officially desegregated military after 1948 participated in these deployments while navigating both military hierarchy and broader social transformations associated with the Civil Rights era. The archive captures a range of activities from patrol and training environments to civic encounters and public events offering a geographically dispersed visual record of Black military presence within U.S. Cold War operations. Light wear and minor handling present; captions and details remain legible; overall very good condition. unknown

réf. 110834Maps of the four main islands of Japan and the Korean Peninsula are surrounded by borders of cherry blossom and bamboo with scenes of Mt Fuji a pagoda and birds on the wing. Major cities are shown on the maps; Korea has Pyongyang Seoul and Pusan with '38° LINE' in a much larger font across the centre. The album 275 × 390 mm contains three series of commercially produced small photographic views loosely inserted behind photo-corners 40 hand-coloured views of Japan; 56 black and white views of Tokyo; and 40 black and white views of the Kure-Hiro district as well as 11 larger personal photographs of Bangkok. The last three items in the album are more significant: they are professionally produced photographs of two destroyers of the RAN - HMAS 'Anzac' D59 and HMAS 'Warramunga' D123 - and a large group portrait of three officers and twelve sailors of the 'Warramunga'. Both these ships served in the Korean War. The album and its contents appear to have been purchased by one of the crew members of the 'Warramunga' after she became one of the first Australian warships assigned to the Far East Strategic Reserve in 1955. unknown
