Originally planned as a trip to study the bird life of the island it was soon enlarged to include an exploration of the interior. The original number of participants was 18 under the leadership of F C R Jourdain and was funded by subscription. A return trip occurred in 1922 by three of the original participants. This led to the organization of a second expedition in 1923 under the leadership of F G Binney devoted to exploration and a final expedition under Binney in 1924. Though Spitsbergen was a relatively well known area of the Arctic the interior had scarcely been seen. The goal of the expedition was a study of the "ecology" of the environment - something that was new. The Oxford University Expedition Club made small number of such trips to remote parts of the world prior to WWII issuing similar scientific reports. Oxford Univ.
