1930réf. 151871Beirut: Imp. Jeanne D'Arc 1930. A scarce handbook of French colonial rule in the Middle East First edition first impression of this scarce aide-mémoire compiled by the French High Commission for colonial administrators in its Syrian and Lebanese mandates. Copies appear in just eight institutions five French on WorldCat and in the Qatar National Library. The work opens with information on the costume character finances and nomadic patterns of different peoples followed by sections offering detailed discussion of tribes grouped into regions such as Damascus and its environs Alleppo Deir ez Zor and the Djebel Druze. To assist French colonial officials the work outlines the leadership and intertribal relations of each group while the map depicts where tribes are expected to be in winter and summer according to their nomadic patterns. With the size of each tribe's name on the map corresponding to their importance colonial officials could see at a glance how seasonal changes would impact French governance. The fluidity of nomadic movements across the boundaries of the mandate highlights the arbitrary and theoretical nature of colonial territory and borders and the extent to which French imperial authority was "illegitimate and thus unstable" Khoury p. 4. This copy is intriguingly inscribed on the front free endpaper in French "De la part de votre tout dévoué Dictionnaire géographique Beyrouth 23-12-31 Clerris " "On behalf of your totally devoted Geographical Dictionary Beirut 23-12-31 Clerris " with another ownership inscription below. Octavo 225 x 150 mm. Folding map 500 x 578 mm unfolded in rear pocket. Contemporary black cloth-backed snakeskin boards. Rubbing and wear to extremities small split at foot of front inner hinge professionally strengthened with adhesive moderate foxing to top edge and contents folding map toned with crease to bottom right corner slightly affecting printed area map pocket well-preserved. A very good copy. Philip Shukry Khoury "Syria and the French Mandate: The Politics of Arab Nationalism 1920-1945" 2014 1987. hardcover

réf. PF40Oblong Quarto album ca. 19x262 cm. 12 card stock leaves. With 84 mounted original gelatin silver photographs ca. 57x8 cm 2 ¼ x 3 in. No captions. Period brown cardboard album fastened with a string. Binding worn at the edges tear of the spine photos age-toned one photo with minor stains but otherwise a very good album with strong interesting photos. Historically interesting collection of original gelatin silver photographs likely taken by French soldiers stationed in Lebanon and Syria during the French mandate in the 1920s. At the time both nations were under a French administration established shortly after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1922. The mandate period saw major political upheavals including local uprisings the drawing of new borders and the emergence of Beirut and Damascus as cultural and administrative centers under French influence. The album features eighty-four rare amateur photographs of the western Arab World with most images showing early twentieth-century Lebanon. About twenty photos of Baalbek portray local landmarks Temple of Jupiter Hajar al-Hibla Roman Ruins Roman Temple of Bacchus etc. ethnographic views with a clearly visible Lebanese flag waving atop a local dwelling and lively shots of the compiler and his military comrades posing at ancient sites. Especially interesting is a candid urban scene showing locals in European costume and traditional attire standing on the platform or walking along the tracks at Baalbek Railway Station with French police maintaining order. The Lebanon series concludes with a photograph of the iconic Pine Residence in Beirut and well-executed views of the city’s waterfront. Identified photos from Syria mostly show the Grand Café Moderne the entrance to the at-Taynabiyya mausoleum mosque the Umayyad Mosque Bab Tauma and a busy Al Marjeh Square with clearly visible telegraph column trams and horse carts in Damascus. One lively vernacular photograph taken at the historic Midhat Pasha Souh shows dozens of locals busily navigating a dense corridor of marketplace stalls. The other images primarily depict sweeping aerial views of the city residential architecture street reconstruction works and diverse urban scenes. Overall historically interesting collection of original gelatin silver photographs likely taken by French soldiers stationed in Lebanon and Syria during the French mandate in the 1920s. unknown

A couple of photos mildly faded several mounts slightly soiled with creases or small tears but overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Interesting collection of lively vernacular photos showing the archaeological sites and contemporary life of the Ottoman Empire Vilayet of Beirut in the early 20th century. The photos were taken by a French traveller who visited Beirut and Baalbek in 1905. Eight photos of Baalbek include general and street views showing stone houses shops and sellers passers-by &c. Seven photos of the ruins of Roman Heliopolis include general and close-up views featuring the Great Court and Propylaea of the Temple of Jupiter &c. Two lively street views of Beirut show shops passers-by and a donkey tied to a hook on a wall and trying to free himself.
