1841Octavo. Pp. 359, (4). Handsome vignette illustration at end of approbations and introduction. Old stamps. Hardcover, modern cloth, shelf number on sine. A very good copy. ~ First part of three, complete in its own. Second edition, printed in the same year as the first edition. To this edition, which is practically identical to the first, a decorative title-page has been added, with a phrase from the Book of Job printed on verso. Also added here is a Rabbinical Approbation, "Words of Praise from The Wise Men of the Censor of Warsaw", as well as a 4-page Subscribers' list, bound at the end, which are not present in the earlier edition. Written in Hebrew, mostly in Rashi script. Joseph Schönhak was born at Tiktin, 1812; died at Suwalki, 1870. He led a retired life, devoting his time to writing and study. He was the author of "Ha-Mashbir" or "Aruk he-Hadash" (Warsaw 1858). His "Toldath Haaretz" (Toledot ha-Arez) is a natural history in three parts. The subjects are arranged and classified, and a full description of each is given as to color, form, and habitat. Those that are mentioned in the Bible are given book, chapter, and verse; and so with those mentioned in the Talmud. The "Ha-Masbir" is an Aramaic-German rabbinical dictionary, based on Nathan ben Jehiel's "Aruk" ("Hamiluim oder Masbir Hachadasch. Aramäisch-rabinisch-deutsches Wörterbuch, Ergenzung zu dem Hamasbir oder Aruch" Warsaw 1869.) His "Sefer ha-Milluim" was published in Warsaw in 1869 ("Sefer Ha-Miluim Le-Aruch: A dictionary to the Talmud and Midrashim, based on the order of the Aruch, with clarification of readings and sources from the Babylonian and Palestian Talmuds, the Tannaitic Midrahsim (.)" was reprinted 1978, Jerusalem, Makor.) Bibliography: Ha-Maggid, 1870, No. 49; Fuenn, Keneset Yisrael, 1866. See also Isidore Singer and Julius Gottlieb: The Jewish Encyclopedia. Rare.

1900rif. 206431900. Unidentified photographers Palestine stereoview archive ca. 1900-1930 documents religious geography pilgrimage activity and daily life in Palestine during the late Ottoman and British Mandatory periods supporting research into colonial visual culture Western educational media and representations of the Holy Land. The archive reflects the widespread use of stereoscopic imagery in classrooms and lecture circuits where photographic views of biblical sites and contemporary inhabitants were circulated to shape Western understanding of the region. The images foreground Christian pilgrimage locations while also incorporating local populations and landscapes offering a layered record of how Palestine was visually interpreted for foreign audiences in the early twentieth century. Twenty-one albumen stereoview photographs primarily produced by Keystone View Company and Underwood & Underwood depicting locations across Palestine including Jerusalem Bethlehem Nazareth and surrounding regions. Views include the Mount of Olives pilgrims walking along the Via Dolorosa the Garden of Gethsemane and the village of Siloam Silwan. Landscape images show the plains of Jericho the Sharon plain and the hills of Samaria with visible architectural ruins including freestanding stone columns. Several images depict daily activity including a Samaritan woman drawing water from Jacob's Well a cattle drive moving through the Valley of Hinnom and individuals traveling mountainous terrain with pack animals. Interiors and urban edges are suggested through narrow streets and clustered buildings. Many mounts include printed captions on the verso in multiple languages. One Keystone stereoview dated 1909 describes the view from the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem referencing the Valley of Jehoshaphat the Golden Gate and the city's religious divisions. Another caption provides a descriptive overview of Jerusalem's population industries and urban conditions framing the city for an արտաքին educational audience. Produced during a period of transition from Ottoman to British control the archive reflects how Palestine was mediated through commercial photography for Western consumption particularly emphasizing biblical associations and pilgrimage routes while presenting local populations within ethnographic and orientalist frameworks. The stereoview format itself functioned as both entertainment and instruction reinforcing spatial and cultural narratives through three-dimensional illusion. Light edge wear and minor surface handling consistent with use; images remain clear with well-preserved contrast. Overall in very good condition. unknown

1939rif. N4584London: Massada Press 1939 Second impression. Original Wrappers. Very Good. 8vo . 20pp . THE JEWISH RESPONSE of the JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE to the British Government's publication of the " McMahon Letters " published earlier the same month March 16th 1939. The McMahon Letters include the correspondence between Sir Henry McMahon His Majesty's High Commissioner in Egypt and Hussein Sharif of Mecca between 1915 and 1916 and represent a series of letters that were exchanged during World War I in which the British government agreed to recognize Arab independence after the war in exchange for Hussein's launching the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. These alleged promises to the Arab side given before the later BALFOUR DECLARATION OF 1917 were therefore considered by the supporters of the JEWISH CAUSE as being without legal validity. THIS VERY RARE PUBLICATION includes among its documents a STATEMENT BY MCMAHON that the area in which Arab independence was promised DID NOT INCLUDE PALESTINE. - With a folding coloured map of the ARAB TERRITORIES AND PALESTINE. Lower part of the booklet with 2cm wide strip of water stain NOT AFFECTING THE MAP outside cover with some markings on spine and remains of label removed. OTHERWISE A VERY GOOD COPY. 19221st Edition. 8vo. Original Boards. 191 pages ; 18 cm. Simon Glazer (or Shimon Glazer; 1876-1938) was an Orthodox rabbi who flourished at the turn of the twentieth century. He was known for founding and leading two major organizations of American Orthodox rabbis. (Wikipedia, 2016) This is a discussion of the efforts of Rabbi Glazer (through publication in 1922) to organize Jews in the United States and prompt the U. S. Government to support the creation of Jewish state in what would become known as Palestine. The author documents his correspondence with various Jewish organizations, governors, senators, and presidents in trying to persuade them to provide support. Includes facsimiles of several letters of correspondence between Rabbi Glazer and American elected officials and facsimiles of autographed photographs the elected officials sent to Rabbi Glazer (including President Warren Harding) . This copy is signed by Rabbi Galzer on the front end page. OCLC lists 21 copies worldwide. SUBJECT(S) : Zionism -- History. Some wear to boards. Inside pages are clear with very faint browning. Worked as a practising physician. In 1835 he visited Palestine for the first time, and published his travelogue in "Lustreise in Morgenland". In 1845, 1857 and 1865 made further journeys to Palestine. Beside his own travelogues he edited older travel descriptions of Palestine and published a bibliography of the Palestine literature. He died in 1877.
1948381 pages. "This survey seeks to render an account of what the Congress has labored to achieve (in the twelve years since its constituent meeting)... The realities of Jewish life are rapidly shifting before our very eyes, and soon a new generation will arise which knows not our problems and to which many of our controversies will be incomprehensible... A new leaf has been turned over in the relations beween the various Jewish ideological camps, while the proclamation of the State of Israel deeply affects and colors all aspects of Jewish life everywhere." - from Preface.
