1947First edition. Original paper wrappers. 4to. [203] pages. 29cm. In English. Massive report written on November 21, 1947 and dealing with matters related to Jewish settlement in Palestine and the Jewish refugees coming from Europe to America and elsewhere. In January 1939, the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees and Overseas Needs was established, combining the efforts of American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, led by Rabbi Jonah Wise; the United Palestine Appeal, led by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver; and the National Coordinating Committee Fund led by William Rosenwald. The three founders emphasized that the funds needed to support Jews in Europe and Palestine would be triple to quadruple the amount raised in the previous year. While the organizations would raise funds together, the Joint Distribution Committee would assist Jews in Europe, the United Palestine Appeal would aid the Jewish community in Palestine, including refugees from Europe arriving there and the National Coordinating Committee Fund would assist refugees arriving in the United States (Wikipedia, 2016) . 1939réf. 186857London: Issued by the Jewish Agency for Palestine 1939. Second impression of the Jewish Agency's response to the publication of the McMahon Letters correspondence purportedly showing Britain agreeing to Arab independence including over Palestine prior to the Balfour Declaration. The agency interpreted the letters as confirmation that Palestine was always treated separately and not included in territory to be granted to the Arabs. The McMahon Letters were published by the British Government early in 1939 in an attempt to clarify Britain's historical position. This response cites substantiating documents including government statements and T. E. Lawrence's 18 November 1922 draft preface for Seven Pillars of Wisdom. The colour map emphasizes that Palestine amounts to only one per cent of territory under Arab rule. The second impression was published the same year as the first. Octavo pp. 20. With colour folding map of "Arab Territories and Palestine" text on verso. Original printed wrappers wire-stitched as issued front cover lettered in black. A hint of soiling to wrappers and light stain at foot of contents. A very good copy. unknown

1892417 pages. Index. Appendices. Footnotes. List of sixty black and white illustrations. A rare surviving copy of this important reference, made all the more engaging by today's environment of competing fiat currency devaluations. "Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. Attractive gilt decoration upon green front board. Legible gilt lettering upon backstrip. Average external soiling and wear. Several chips from and lengthy openings along backstrip which has become brittle with age. Narrow opening along most of front hinge. Back hinge open. Bookplate discretely removed inside front board. Unmarked. A tender but worthy copy. Book

Lot of 5 original single-sheet maps in copperplate engraving of fine quality. Fine, strong impressions on heavy handmade paper with ample margins all round. First, original state, unaltered by later colouration. Preserved flat in acid-free, pH-balanced, buffered archival paper. In fine condition. - - Full individual descriptions are available on request. - - First edition. Willem Albert Bachiene (1712-1783), Dutch clergyman, later a professor of geography and astronomy at the Illustere School, Maastricht. Well known cartographer. The 3-volume "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land, alsmede andere landen in de H. Schrift voorkomende," is considered among his most important works. It was published in Utrecht between 1763-1768, and included a suite of 12 fine geographical maps of the Holy Land and its neighbouring lands which Bachiene made during a period of ten years, the first in as early as 1758. The map offered herewith is taken from this suite. Other important cartographic works of the Holy Land by Bachiene were included in the so-called "Jehovah Bible" i.e. "De Gansche H. Schrift, Vervattende alle de regelmatige Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments (.) Gods Gedenk-Naam Jehovah onvertaald gehouden" published in 1762 by N. Goetzee of Gorinchem, shortly before the present map first appeared in book form. Whereas other single-sheet maps by Bachiene are in relative abundance, the works from "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land" are very scarce, seldom found in any state, practically unavailable in their original, uncoloured state. - - Note regarding this lot: Each of the 5 maps in this lot is offered also separately. 19181st edition. Period boards. 8vo. 161 pages. 26 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to Jewish Law: Science Quarterly. A fascinating Zionist Hebrew journal from the early Soviet period providing insight into the rarely discussed topic of the Jewish legal revival movement that occurred in Palestine during the British Mandate. It deals with practical, modern applications of Jewish law that were, no doubt, highly influential on the development of law in modern Israel. Dikshtein was a leading advocate of creating a legal system based on Jewish law, but fit for statehood. (Likhovski, 2006) . He was a practicing lawyer in Europe before emigrating to Palestine. He was also awarded the Israel Prize for jurisprudence in 1957. (Wikipedia, 2018) . SUBJECTS: Jewish law -- Periodicals. OCLC lists three copies worldwide (HUC, Brandeis, Harvard) , none in New York. Ex-library with usual, minimal markings. Pages are browning, but clean. Overall Very Good Condition. (YID-30-39)
