1939réf. 194004London: His Majesty's Stationery Office March 1939. His Majesty's Government were not free to dispose of Palestine First edition of the British Government's official report into the controversial McMahon-Hussein letters which concluded that "His Majesty's Government were not free to dispose of Palestine without regard for the wishes and interests of the inhabitants of Palestine" p. 11. Issued shortly after the full letters were made public for the first time the report was adopted at a meeting of British and Arab delegations to the St James's Palace Conference on the future of Palestine. British representatives on the drafting committee maintained that Palestine was excluded from McMahon's commitments but agreed that "the language in which its exclusion was expressed was not so specific and unmistakable as it was thought to be at the time" p. 10. Octavo. Original printed self-wrappers wire-stitched as issued. General toning and creasing small losses to wrappers at spine a few light stains on rear cover: very good. unknown
1936réf. 192367London: Hechalutz Organisation of England 1936. Second edition updated from the first of January 1936. This handbook written for young Zionists "bent upon a systematic study of Palestine as it is and who look forward to meeting these problems on the very soil" p. 1 covers the history geography and administration of the region before advocating for Jewish settlement under the guidance of Hechalutz. Hechalutz was a youth movement that aimed to "train Jewish youth and Jewish workers for a life of Zionist pioneering and for participation in the endeavour to establish the Jewish Labour commonwealth in Eretz-Yisrael" p. 65. It was founded in 1905 in America before spreading to Europe. David Ben-Gurion and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi both led Hechalutz in its early years and Golda Meir was secretary of its American women's chapter from 1932 to 1934. Other chapters detail the history of Israeli immigration into Palestine introduce the work of the Histadrut labour union identify areas of land not yet fully exploited and therefore good options for settlers and emphasize British support for settlement through the Balfour Declaration. This copy has a profile of Ben-Zvi in the Jewish Vanguard 1953 loosely inserted. Small octavo. Original green paper wrappers wire-stitched as issued wrappers lettered in black. Wrappers a little toned and finger-soiled especially along spine contents clean: a very good copy indeed. unknown
1931réf. 193968Jerusalem: Printing and Stationery Office Russian Buildings 1931. Topography and political conflict First edition of this booklet issued by the Palestine Government providing the official spelling in Arabic Hebrew and English of more than 1100 localities in Mandatory Palestine. This copy was in the library of the Department of Health Jerusalem which was responsible for environment sanitation vaccine inoculation and public health in Palestine. This was the second official publication on Palestinian place names for use in government correspondence maps road signs and postal and telegraph services following the first list of 1925. In this edition however the Department of Education simply adopted the Arabic names for Hebrew transliterating them from Arabic into Hebrew. This practice contrasted with that of the 1925 list which replaced more than one-third of the Arabic place names with Hebrew names derived from the Bible and other ancient Jewish sources. These changes such as the use of Nablus instead of Shekhem and Nazareth instead of En-Nasira had major socio-political implications. The Zionist leadership sent a strongly worded protest to the Mandatory government against "the transparent attempt and the clear trend of the British to Arabize place names in Palestine" Katz pp. 1068. Like all other topographical glossaries issued during the British Mandate place-name transliteration was based on the conventions of the Royal Geographical Society R.G.S.II with slight revisions specially approved for Palestine. The glossary is also a linguistic tour de force adapting place names of diverse origins including Greek and Phoenician to three languages and alphabets and opens with a detailed introduction to the basic phonetics of each. Octavo. Arabic Hebrew and English text. Original stamped blue wrappers wire-stitched as issued. Ex-library of Department of Health Central Laboratory Jerusalem with usual library markings. Wrappers a bit faded corners and lower outer corner of text block a trifle creased contents toned: a very good copy. Y. Katz "Identity Nationalism and Placenames: Zionist Efforts to Preserve the Original Local Hebrew Names in Official Publications of the Mandate Government of Palestine" Names: A Journal of Onomastics vol. 43 1995. unknown
