Two volumes bound in original blue cloth with spine titles in gilt. Moderate wear to the bindings. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf of Volume I "To S. A. Ashe / with the author's esteem / Landon C. Bell / May 20 1929." Samuel A'Court Ashe 1840-1938 was a lawyer and a Confederate Captain in the Civil War. After the War he served in the North Carolina legislature and was a noted historian author and defender of the Confederacy. There is also a signed typed letter laid in loosely from Drewry McKee Smith to Captain Sam Ashe dated 1929. This is actually a copy of a letter to someone else that the sender signed and sent to Captain Ashe. Includes the original stamped envelope which is on browned paper. Unfortunately someone has stuck this in a folded and taped mylar sleeve and the envelop is stuck to the tape inside the sleeve. The books are NOT signed by Samuel A. Ashe.
