19424 vols., in 1, 8vo., First Editions, with frontispieces and plates; newly and handsomely bound in full navy blue crushed morocco, sides with double frame border in gilt, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled and tooled in gilt with an anchor device, all original pictorial wrappers (a little dust-soiled) preserved, a splendid copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The definitive record of corvette service in WWII, the set comprises 'HM Corvette' (1942), 'East Coast Corvette' (1943), 'Corvette Command' (1944) and 'HM Frigate' (1946). The first three volumes were combined and issued in slightly abridged form as 'Three Corvettes' (1945). Taken together and in sequence the four volumes provide a near-continuous record of Monsarrat's own wartime service. Furthermore they contain much of the inspiration and context, and in several cases actual incidents which reappear in the author's masterpiece 'The Cruel Sea' (1951), arguably the finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII. Monsarrat's seatime began in HMS Campanula [broadly the 'HMS Flower' of the first volume] on the North Atlantic convoys; at one time she was the only RN vessel operating out of St. Johns. She is perhaps best known for her service in convoy OG71 (Milford Haven-Gibraltar, August 1941) which suffered so badly at the hands of a U-boat pack that it was ordered to seek shelter in neutral Lisbon. Many of the merchantmen were lost (including the SS Aquila with 22 Wrens aboard) together with the escorts HMS Bath and HMS Zinnia. The full story is related by Lund and Ludlam in 'Nightmare Convoy' (1987). He then transferred to HMS Guillemot ['HMS Dipper' in the second volume] serving on the East Coast convoys. Among the actions portrayed are the torpedoing of HMS Vortigern by E-boat S-104, and the successful destruction of an HE-111 in August 1941. HMS Guillemot's captain, Lombard-Hobson' has said of Monsarrat 'he was reserved and unpopular, but I liked him myself'. Monsarrat then assumed command of HMS Shearwater ['HMS Winger' in the third volume] operating in the North Sea out of Harwich. Individual volumes are becoming increasingly elusive. Complete sets are seldom offered for sale, especially in this condition. Enser, p.120 (HM Corvette); Law 1008 (East Coast Corvette), 1007 (Corvette Command) and 1084 (HM Frigate). Astonishingly 'HM Corvette' is not recorded by Law.

Black cloth with bright red lettering top block edges dyed red a fine copy in a beautiful dust jacket with no rips or tears. A splendid copy. Unusual in that there is a 4 page insert on bright red paper giving a brief description and a location map! The 4th Lt. Valcour title. "An extortionist's note demanding $20000 in cash and threatening the kidnapping of Kate Willett's two mentally unbalanced sons sent Lieutenant Valcour rushing up to the Willetts' Adirondacks camp. There death struck with slashing suddenness while Valcour was talking to young Arthur Willett who was sprawled on a sofa smoking a cigarette. Listening to the crackling roar of flames in the fireplace Valcour detected the odor of burning cloth. He glanced at Arthur to find the cigarette lying in Arthur's lap and Arthur's chin slumped on his chest. Valcour rushed to his side and in stunned amazement stared at the dark mark where a bullet had entered Arthur's skull!." -- Publisher This copy although not marked as such comes from the auction of the Gary Gorton Crime Fiction collection of detective fiction. 1932ref. 42466Berlin: Carl Sabo 1932. First edition. Softcover. vg. Folio 12 x 9". Unpaginated. 8pp. Original illustrated wrappers with black and white lettering to covers. This 8-page pro-Hindenburg political pamphlet was published after the first round of the 1932 German presidential elections March 13 and which saw no candidate obtaining an absolute majority of the votes cast though the incumbent President Paul von Hindenburg with 49.6% failed only by a narrow margin. Hindenburg was opposed to Adolf Hitler NSDAP who arrived second with 30.1% Ernst Thälmann KPD who made it to the third place with 13.2% Theodor Duesterberg Stahlhelm who arrived fourth with 6.8%. The lesser candidates gathered 0.3% of the votes cast. These were the second and final direct elections to the office of President of the Reich Reichspräsident Germany's head of state under the Weimar Republic. Under the Weimar system the presidency was a powerful office. Hindenburg who deeply distrusted and personally detested Hitler had been motivated to run for a second term primarily by a desire to stop Hitler from winning the presidency. Nevertheless following his re-election Hindenburg failed to prevent the Nazis from assuming power. Two successive federal elections left the Nazis as the largest party in the Reichstag and anti-democratic parties in control of a majority of its seats. Under this political climate Hindenburg reluctantly appointed Hitler as Chancellor of Germany on January 30 1933. This pamphlet titled "Erwachen." Awakening is profusely illustrated with numerous duo-tone photogravures and illustrations by C. Vogt depicting a character named Michel asleep dreaming and waking up to a better and safer Germany with Hindenburg. The last page contains the following warning: "Get rid of radicalism! Do not leave the helm of the state to the inexperienced! Your vote only for Hindenburg." Text in German. Wrappers and interior in very good condition. Carl Sabo unknown
