1844réf. 008189Philadelphia: M. Fithian 1844. Paperback. Good. 12 p.; 22 cm. Lacking wrapper. Stamped on title page: "Case 42 Shelf E." In early May 1844 Protestant nativists in Philadelphia feeling threatened by the inscreasing number of Catholic immigrants held public meetings accusing Catholics of seeking to have the Bible removed from public schools among other things. Incendiary language led to violence in which people and buildings were attacked. The Court of Quarter Sessions created a grand jury to investigate which concluded that the Catholics were to blame and the nativists were "unoffending citizens." On June 18 1844 a meeting of Catholic citizens of the city appointed a committee to draft a response. In this address they refute the unfounded charge that they sought to have the Bible removed from the schools and responded to other recent events. In Good Condition: chipping along spine; first leaf and last are partially detached; very lightly soiled. M. Fithian paperback
1908réf. 2119Baltimore: Press of King Bros. Printers and Publishers 1908. Saddle-stapled wrappers. Octavo. 14 pages. Very good in printed blue-gray wrappers. Vertical crease at midpoint from being folded no doubt to fit a coat pocket and light extremity rubs else fine. Thom's address presenting the statue of Lord Calvert founder of Maryland to the City of Baltimore in 1908. The statue was created by Albert Weinert 1865-1947 at a cost of $5000. It stands in front of the Clarence Mitchell Jr. Courthouse on St. Paul Street in downtown Baltimore. In his address Thom praises the three goals Calvert sought to instill in the colony of Maryland--religious toleration separation of church and state and equality of voter representation. He finds the first two strong but the last wanting in 1908 and complains of certain electoral districts in Maryland holding excess influence in the legislature. Inscribed and signed on front cover by Thom thus: "Compliments of / DeCourcy W. Thom." One ink correction to interior text presumably in Thom's hand.
