RAILWAY TOURISM AND THE GARDINER GATEWAY-YELLOWSTONE'S ORIGINAL NORTHERN RAILWAY ENTRANCE. The Northern Pacific Railway promoted Gardiner Montana as the original northern gateway to Yellowstone National Park. The railway reached Gardiner in 1903 the year President Theodore Roosevelt participated in laying the cornerstone of the nearby Roosevelt Arch. The arch became a prominent symbol of the park's northern entrance. By 1910 however the Northern Pacific faced competition from other railway routes to Yellowstone. This brochure belongs to the period when the company was actively promoting its own route and the scenic journey from Gardiner into the park. The title subsequently continued in a series of Northern Pacific promotional booklets through 1917. SCENIC PHOTOGRAPHY AND RAILWAY PROMOTION. The brochure uses toned photographs decorative borders and maps to present Yellowstone as an appealing travel destination. Its combination of scenic imagery and practical excursion information illustrates how railways marketed national parks to an expanding tourist public. The executive roster and fare information also give the brochure documentary value as a record of the Northern Pacific's commercial operations during the early automobile era.
