193318 pages, including 2 sketch maps. Plus photographic plates. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a fascinating account of a two-year expedition in the New Hebrides, focusing on the twelve months spent on Malekula, the second largest island of the group, being 46 miles long and 26 miles wide, and being densely forested from the shore-belt to the top of the hills. The remainder of the time was spent on four other islands with six weeks on Vanua Lava, Banks Islands. The natives of Malekula were Malenesians and were reported to be quite primitive, still unuaccustomed to caucasians exploring their land. This first-hand account reveals indigenous customs and beliefs, implements and their purpose, and also discusses cannibalism. Two previous surveyers, Mr. McPahail and Mr. Deacon both died of blackwater fever before completing their work on the island. Their untimely deaths made it difficult for Miss Cheesman to later enlist native guides to accompany her, as they believed that death was always due to supernaural interference. Unwittingly, Cheesman earned a reputation of being some kind of super-bush-devil and was indeed able to achieve her objectives.

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is an exceptional report on the geology and natural history of the Island of Tahiti provided by a distinguished naturalist, Dr. Crossland, illustrated with several sketch maps showing Tahiti and Taiarapu; the mouth of the Fautaua River, Taunoa Harbour; the mouth of the Punaruu river, as well as, amazing photographs depicting west coast of Tahiti; the island of Moorea from Atine; the north-east side of Tahara Head; Papeari; beach of Pocillopora on Motu Au; a wrecked islet off Hitiaa; and "Nansouty" islet. The author also discusses how the three easternmost groups of Polynesia differ one from another by decribing their volcanic origin, maritime flats, and coral reefs. Crossland was praised in his obituary in the journal "Nature" as 'one of the last explorer-naturalists of the Darwin type'.

1925réf. 1912074Seattle: John Muir School & Press of The Co-operative Printing Company 1925. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. 1st printing. Printed greenish-gray small 8vo wraps. 71pp. This is a rare little book published by John Muir School in Seattle to honor by way of a pageant the great naturalist. Contents "Leaves of the John Muir Book" consist of following the Acknowledgments: Introduction by Principal Jessie Lockwood. A second introductory page typeset & printed on a sheet slightly smaller than the book's dimensions and tipped in is titled "The Writing of the John Muir Pageant". It is dated March 1928 Foreword Original prose and verse by the pupils inspired by the study and production of the Pageant Quotations from the writings of John Muir and Appreciations of John Muir by different authors. The pageant section lists part episodes music characters. In pencil on the ffep is a four-line inscription "Compliments of / Miss Jessie Lockwood / Prin. John Muir / School. Mar. 1929." We do not know if the handwriting is Ms. Lookwood's. HistoryLinkdotorg says this of the school in part: "A new school opened in 1910. It was named York School after the neighborhood. Residents of the neighborhood petitioned the Seattle School Board in September 1915 to rename the school John L. Wilson. The board chose to delay making any change. In 1921 Principal Jessie Lockwood was asked to select a new name for the school. She chose to honor Scottish-born naturalist John Muir who founded the Sierra Club in 1892 and was instrumental in establishing Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Service. Part of her motivation for selecting Muir was the hope that students would develop a love of nature and a desire to conserve natural beauty." On the back cover is a sizable white residue - not really an embedded stain. It occupies a somewhat small part of the page overall yet is a blemish that detracts. A very small perhaps one-half quarter or more size of the same whitish blemish on the upper fore edge of the front cover. Hinges sound. As noted rare. This book belongs in any serious we believe library on John Muir. John Muir School & Press of The Co-operative Printing Company unknown
