He reached Bengal Presidency in November 1862 and was appointed assistant magistrate and collector of Birbhum in the lower provinces of Bengal. He compiled the matter of the then 240 districts and they were condensed into the nine volumes of the Imperial Gazetteer of India which was published in 1881. Sir Herbert Hope Risle KCIE CSI 4 January 185130 September 1911 was a British ethnographer and colonial administrator a member of the Indian Civil Services. He edited some parts of the first edition of The Imperial Gazetteer of India. Sir William Stevenson Meyer GCIE KCSIE 13 February 186019 October 1922 was an Indian Civil Service officer. From 1902 to 1908 he was the editor of the Imperial Gazetteer of India. Sir Richard Burn CSI 1 February 187126 July 1947 was a Civil Servant in British India.
