1885In-8 p. (mm. 218x138), 14 volumi (di cui 1 di Indice), mz. pelle editoriale (con abras. e picc. mancanze; tracce d’uso ai piatti), ogni vol. di ca. 460/570 pagg. Seconda edizione, completa, di questa grandiosa opera statistica dell’intero Impero Britannico in India. La prima fu pubblicata in 9 volumi nel 1881. “The publication of "The Imperial Gazetteer of India" marks the completion of the largest national enterprise in statistics which has ever been undertaken. This gigantic work has been carried out under the uninterrupted direction of Dr. Hunter, its original designer, from the initial stage of local inquiry in each of the 240 Districts of India to the final arrangement of the results in an alphabetical form.. The article "India" in volume IV (volume VI in this second ed.) is the touchstone of the work, and proves clearly enough the sterling metal of which it is wrought.. It is, moreover, the only attemps that has ever been made to show how the Indian people have been built up, and the evidence from the original materials have been for the first time sifted and examined by the light of the local researches in which the author was for so long engaged..” (see “The Times”, May 26, 1881). L’opera (che si occupa anche di geografia, storia, economia e governo dell’India) è così composta: “1° Abar to Balasinor - 2° Balasor to Biramganta - 3° Birbhum to Cocanada - 4° Cochin to Ganguria - 5° Ganjam to Indi - 6° India (pp. 747) - 7° Indore to Kardong - 8° Karens to Madnagarh - 9° Madras Presidency to Multai - 10° Multan to Palhalli - 11° Pali to Ratia - 12° Ratlam to Sirmur - 13° Sirohi to Zumkha - 14° Index.

Defense of the Comte de Lally for his actions in India during the Seven Years' War. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally head of the French expedition to India reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable he was incredibly unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding. A publisher's note is dated April 14 and Lally was executed May 6. The map shows the Indian subcontinent and Madagascar. unknown books
1964réf. BIBLIO-01781G. K. Hall & Co Boston 1964 reprint. 10 vols cloth folio 358 x 260 mm. pp. About 90000 entries. A massive catalogue of the printed books in European languages in the India Office Library including many rarities and very comprehensive coverage of material on the British Raj. The European Printed Books collection was originally part of the library set up by the Honourable East India Company in 1801 to safeguard books entrusted to it by its servants and others. The Company's Directors soon began to collect actively rather than just receiving material and from the outset made their stock available to orientalist scholars as well as maintaining and augmenting it as an official reference resource. After the demise of the Company in 1858 its responsibilities were taken over by the newly-established India Office and coverage started to concentrate on material relating to the Indian sub-continent and its affairs together with those of Burma. The European Printed Books collection holds a considerable amount of extremely rare Indian and UK material and is the primary repository for material on the history of British India. Contents : Vols 1-2: Sheaf catalogue A-Z. Vols 3 - 6: Author catalogue A-Z. Vols 7 - 9 : Subject catalogue A-Z. Vol 10: Catalogue of periodicals. Accessions until 1936 were included in an Author catalogue in sheaf form in which entries from twenty-two volumes of uncumulated printed catalogues and printed supplementary accessions lists were pasted in a single alphabetical sequence. In 1936 the cataloguing system was reorganised; all subsequent accessions were entered in two card catalogues one Author the other Subject. The present work accordingly reproduces a the whole of the Author sheaf catalogue containing accessions to 1936 in Volumes 1 and 2 and b in Volumes 3-9 the Author and Subject card catalogues containing accessions from 1936 to the end of 1963 together with some recatalogued pre-1936 accessions and c periodical publications as a separate sequence at the end of the Author card catalogue Volume 10.
