1921rif. ABC_45215Calcutta: Superintendent of Government Printing 1921. Contemporary half calf green cloth sides gold-stamped red spine labels. 8vo. With frontispiece 31 plates 7 maps 3 in pocket on inside of back board and 8 panoramas mostly folding. First edition of the British-Indian armys official account of the 1919-20 Waziristan campaign marked "Confidential" on the title-page. The operations followed unrest that arose in the aftermath of the Third Anglo-Afghan War; they were conducted in the mountainous region of Waziristan now in Pakistan by British and Indian forces against the fiercely independent Waziri and Mahsud tribesmen that inhabited it. Since the 1870s the British government agencies were assiduous in compiling internally published histories of their military frontier operations with the intention of providing a "valuable guide" to such British commanders and policymakers as "might have future dealings with these turbulent neighbours" as the Punjab Government phrased it in 1866.The title-page reports the catalogue number and location of what may be the original report: Catalogue no. C.W. 4 - Case no. 8987 N.S..Serial No. 1235 stamped on the title-page. Occasional light marginal staining. A few edge flaws consistent with army use repaired by a contemporary owner. Otherwise in very good condition.l WorldCat 11497145. Superintendent of Government Printing, hardcover

1880rif. List3871Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1880. Carte de visite measuring approximately 2 ½ x 4 inches. Albumen portrait of an Indian man wearing a turban and white garment mounted on photographer's card. Printed verso headed "India Missionary Photographs" advertising copies of "this and other India photographs printed by first-class artists in Philadelphia from negatives taken in India" sold for the benefit of foreign mission work. Addressed in print to Rev. A. D. Rowe York Pennsylvania or Miss Alice Geiger Secretary Woman's Missionary Society Springfield Ohio. Light wear and toning; very good. A carte de visite portrait from a series of India missionary photographs printed in Philadelphia from negatives taken in India and sold to raise money for foreign mission work. The verso offers the photographs in card and cabinet sizes with prices for single copies small groups and lots of one hundred suggesting that the images were intended for circulation among church members missionary supporters and women's missionary societies. American missions in South Asia were less politically dominant than British missionary work there but were active throughout the nineteenth century especially through Congregational Presbyterian Baptist Methodist and women's missionary societies. By the later nineteenth century American mission networks in India supported schools medical work printing itinerant preaching and fundraising efforts at home of which photographic cards like this were one small part. A strong nineteenth-century missionary CDV especially for its printed verso documenting the reproduction pricing and circulation of South Asian photographs through American foreign mission networks this being the first example we have encountered with a South Asian subject. unknown
